I know the two favorites are AVG and Avgas, but I was wondering if there were any updates.

I've got AVG on two machines, but am not all that thrilled with their update about a year ago- slowed things down some.

And the software I got with this machine I'm typing on expires today.

Tried to install Avgas, but it failed, and locked things up. So now I'm shaky about it, too.

Since software changes too much, I didn't want to zombie an old thread, too.

    Thoughts?

Free - Microsoft Security Essentials. Just works, doesn't pop up irritating messages every 3 seconds and did I mention, it's free?

For paid for AV, I use Avira - I used their free version for a while but I liked the paid one enough to keep paying for it. Again, it is fairly unobtrusive and just does the job.

    In reply to BoxheadTim:

I've been using the free version of Avira for years now. Works good, quick updates, unobtrusive. So, +1 to that.

Yea, must have been something mental.

I already have maylware + spybot as twins. Love them both.

But was looking more for basic protection.

MS Essentials.. hmm. Maybe i even have that.

I've been using Avira after AVG broke my wireless connection on two separate computers. No complaints.

I'm using AVG, it does eat some memory at times, I download lots of torrent files, its saved my ass about 5 times in the past year.
