So yesterday morning the water heater started pissing water out of the top of the unit. Called landlord, plumber should be here this afternoon.
I really need a hot shower.

Full sized water heater? If he ends up throwing it out and putting a new one in, you should get out your angle grinder and take the sheet metal skin. There's enough there to make an entire hood.
They have a ten year life span.
Yeah it's a full size heater lol.
It's only 6 years old too.

Really depends on the water you run through it. At home on the farm, we would replace water heaters every 3-4 years. Here, I bought one 16 years ago, have never changed the anode, and its working just fine.
Yeah, our village has exceptionally bad water. I'm actually not surprised it crapped out. My landlord has never serviced it.

great...I've been in the house for 11 years...haven't replaced either of them. am I screwed?
Service? Uh oh. Mine's at the 10 year mark as well.
Ten years? Really? Aye Carumba, mine crapped out probably 15 years ago and pissed all over the floor - enough that the cat box was floating. Does this mean I can look forward to that again soon?
Arrghh hadn't heard from plumber, called landlord, plumber stuck on other job, can't be here until Monday morning.
We have heavy calcium in our water - cheap gas fired 40 gallon units go about 5 years and 1 week.
I worked for a guy who wanted to start a business just replacing water heaters. 800 number and a box truck with a few of the most common ones inside and wait for the phone to ring.
The last time I tried to buy an anode, I couldn't find one. A lot of the time, you can't get the old one out.
My sister in law's went bad a few months ago. She didn't have a lot of cash and found that the water company would install a new one and lease it to her for a few bucks per month. It will probably cost a little more in the long run, but the water company owns it and will replace it as needed.
