In a given gear, highest torque does not necessarily equate to hardest acceleration, nor does highest hp. I'll post a graph in a few mins if excel will cooperate with me

At a given speed, highest HP always equates to hardest acceleration.

Horsepower and torque directly relate. The two value that link them together are the sample RPM and the constant 5252. This is why hp and torque always cross at 5252 RPMs. A dyno graph represents hundreds of samples of torque at each RPM. Horsepower is then calculated by using the equation I posted earlier at each sample. Engines that you commonly find in Hondas produce little torque compared to a 302 cu. In. V8, but they commonly produce a good percentage of their maximum torque at very high engine speeds and are this capable of showin very high hp numbers. My mustangs 302 produced 300 ft-on of torque at it peak (neigh 3 times that of an s2000) but the Honda produce more hp because the mustang actually produces less torque above 5500 rpms than the Honda.

Well, yes. If you have engine 1 and engine 2 strapped to identical dynos, and engine 1 produces more hp at each given RPM sample, it is also producing more torque at each of those samples.

I'm ignoring drag effects, of course. I am sure that my Mazda with its torque "peak" (kind of like the highest spot in Kansas) at around 6500rpm, does not do its hardest acceleration at 6500 in top gear. I don't think it could even get up to 6500 in top gear.

In the lower gears were aero and tire drag don't play as much a part, it definitely feels like it pulls hardest there.

Your vaunted site hiccuped when I attempted to post the first time

Actually it was likely a momentary blip in connectivity somewhere between my location and the GRM server's location.

Ah. Probably was my fault. There's a pretty good chance I was restarting the server about that time.
