That's beautiful. If I could see in color, I would be in the Air Force flying those today.

Interesting how the shockwave forms on the wings here. I've seen vids of F14s breaking the sound barrier and the shockwave seems to form on the nosecone...

I bet it did form on the nose, and the picture was caught with it there on the wings, my .02 anyway.

Hmmm...every time I think supersonic, I think SR-71 and J-58s in full afterburner.

Quoted because that is a cool picture and everyone wanted to look at it twice.

That engine pic makes my man parts happy.

That's the only thing I miss about aviation. NOTHING smells better than burnt Jet A.

Yes. I 100% guarantee you that I would be a fighter pilot if my eyes worked right.

Too many years on the flightline in the Florida heat. 90+ summers on a concrete ramp with with F-15s rolling by. The exhaust side isn't so bad but the intake side screams and after awhile the combination of sound and fumes will make your head feel like it's going to explode. Some days I miss it!

Except J-58s burn JP-7. You can flick lit matches at it all day and it'll never light. HABU crews use TEB (Triethylborane) chemicals to light em' off.

Do they still fly those planes (SR-71)? I know they're essentially useless now, but they have to get some of them off the ground, right? Or are they all grounded with their engines removed and stored in warehouses? Or Decepticons?

Since you guys like The Sled, here's Top Gear's favourite pilot, James May flying shotgun in another Cold War bird.

A little research shows the last one flew in 1999.

    9 October 1999: The last flight of the SR-71 (#61-7980/NASA 844).

    Way cool plane though.

It was my dream to be a fighter (or attack helo) pilot when I was a kid.

For chairborne jet jockeys, check out the Strike Fighters series. It's like the Miata of fight sims: It'll run on older hardware, it's hardcore enough to please most rivet counters but accessible for anyone who wants to graduate from Ace Combat, and there is a metric butt-ton of free and payware add-ons (like almost every military jet imaginable, new maps, campaigns, etc.). The SF series has been a great time-waster these past few weeks while I waited for the sun to come back from vacation.
