The neat thing about the loose boxes of 550 is that after driving around with them in your trunk (you know, to the range), when you open the box, all the bullets are pointing down.
OK, "THE BRICK" is not the same as "a Brick." All depends on the meaning of the word "the," right? I don't know if they even still sell classic bricks of 10 boxes. I haven't seen one in a long time, but I haven't been looking for them either.
I once bought a case of bricks of Russian 22LR's, standard velocity, from Sportsman's Guide. That stuff was really accurate and dirt cheap. I shot it in competition, but it ran out of steam after 75 yards from the Contender barrel and I was losing rams (they have to fall down). I started using the Remingtons for 100 yards.
Our walmart has an entire shelf of .22 caliber ammunition. Bricks and non bricks too, though I can't imagine why you'd want to buy it in quantities less than five hundred.

A former coworker was in a gun shop one time when a guy came in and asked if he could buy one bullet. 
They didn't know what he wanted it for, but figured it probably wasn't something good.

I blame the whole .22LR ammo shortage on the 10/22.
And I really like mine, with its aftermarket laminate stock, heavy barrel, 3X9 scope, sear, and hammer ... 
when I was a kid we went to my friends house, would sit 12 gauge shotgun shells in a board with a hole drilled in it across the creek, and have marksmanship contest to see who could hit the centerfire on the shotgun shell with the .22 first.
How we still have sight, I'm not sure.

I bet that most of us wonder how we are still alive. I should be dead several times over, based on today's culture.
But what you did sounds cool. Hhhmmmmmm.
You have to hit the primer exactly or the thing won't go off.
shooting a live 12ga shell sounds fun.

The guy was probably going to off himself. Hope they didn't sell it to him.
