Most don't need defending, as they aren't offended because they don't understand. If they were offended that would be a different story.

In my life I have seen a number of "exceptional" kids who had large siblings. Very protective large siblings. For me, it was pure joy watching the punks get pounded by said large sibling. When growing up in Ohio, the family next door to me had a Down's syndrome daughter. As sweet a child as you could ever find. However, if you messed with her, she was as strong as a country ox. A few of Da Boyz found out the hard way. Yah, go tell your buds you got your clock cleaned by the Tard. I liked her a lot.

The above is is the most ridiculous thing I've read on the board.
I'll paraphrase Ghandi:
"A man's greatness is measured by how he treats the weakest."

Well it's obvious that you don't work with them.
If I called you a name and you took it as a compliment then it was a compliment no matter what I meant. A lot of them don't have the capacity to see Tard as a derrogatory comment, therefore it's not.

Actually, sir, I do. And I promised to not engage in an on-line debate, but I can't help myself. If YOU work with special needs children or adults, then you owe it to them and your profession to set a higher standard for yourself.

I think the point that some are trying to make is that to insult or verbally mistreat a developmentally delayed (current PC term) or mentally disabled person, whether they feel insulted or not indicates a character problem with the person doing the insulting. I agree, they are a-holes.
On the other hand, calling someone who is not mentally abnormal an idiot, retarded or mentally disabled because they did something stupid and you want to be point is in a different category, I think. In clinical settings the words idiot and retarded are no longer used because they became a common way of insulting "normal" people and were considered too derogatory.

The only question is when is it mistreating someone? I could call you a Democrat and you'd be fine with it, but that might be the ultimate insult to me. So who is mistreated?
The professional standard set is to do no harm. There are ways to use the term to do harm and other times, places and people that it does no harm. It's a common word used by them, quite often, as a matter of fact. Usually it's meant in jest.

People choose to be democrats or not- they have a choice - that's a big difference. Do you really think it's ok to make fun of someone with an extra chromosone? Whether they know they are being made fun of or not is besides the point.
As repulsive as it is I will defend your right to say it though - it just makes you like like an ignorant fool, and that is your choice.

You left out the Ford vs chevy/Chevy vs ford people.
We all know there are more, not that there is any need to list them.
