    I will continue to refer to people who do silly things like over-tighten a bolt because they forgot the golden "righty-tighty/lefty-loosy" rule as retards but... in order to not offend ninny-types who might overhear, I'll spell it RETAHD and pronounce it as Reeeeetaaaahhhhhhdzzz to further distinguish it from any negative connotation. I will try to feel superior but I don't think it's as necessary.

    You seem to be missing the point that it is COMPLETELY unnecessary to spell it OR pronounce it. You can get you message across in other ways, like saying, "That was silly", or "How's that working out for you, pal?"

    And people who don't curse or use words that they consider "offensive" often have a sense of moral and/or intellectual superiority over those who do...and round and round we go.

    I hear the phrase "there's no need to 'resort' to name calling" here quite a bit. Personally, I feel that getting offended or hurt by name calling is pretty childish; i.e. HARDEN THE berkeley UP!!!

    IIRC, I was the first one who never got to be a Tard. In fact, I remember starting a thread on the old board called "Almost a Tard, just a Dork.

    I don't think this is a question of loosening up. My objection, and what may have saused this E36storm was to the idea that you could call someone an offensive word, as long as they thought it was a compliment. Specifically, that one could call a developmentally-delayed person a 'tard without being insulting, because he or she may perceive the comment to it to be a compliment.

    That's still offensive.
