On Friday, I'm flying to Vancouver, then on to Whitehorse where my driving partner and I will drive all the way to Anchorage Alaska. It's part of the "Arctic Route Adventure" a series of road trips initiated by a group of very motivated Italians who've toured through Norway, Iceland and Scotland...and now the Arctic. A small group of Canadian journalists was invited to join them on this leg. Although we've been forewarned that the accommodations may be somewhat more "rustic" than the typical press event, it should prove to be an exciting adventure. We're not exactly roughing during the drive, since we'll be piloting Porsche Cayennes.

Never been further north than Sudbury/North Bay, just wish I could get "The Cremation of Sam McGee" out of my head...

Sounds like quite an adventure. Never been to that part of Canada, but I've been to Anchorage and Fairbanks, and in between the two. Have fun and enjoy the scenery.

Man, that sounds like a load of fun! I don't envy you being away from home so much, but trips like this would be a blast. Good luck!

Almost sounds like a vacation, :) ...almost

Shoot, why stop at Anchorage, plenty of great country to explore to the north.. and you gotta see Denali. Good lodging there too or RV it. Stop and talk to the locals too, they are part of the experience. They are what Americans were like 30 years ago, they don't do PC and don't claim the lower 48 states for that reason, my kinda people. Scenery is great, you wouldn't be disappointed.

Thanks guys! fasted58 - much as I'd love to, we have a route that we can't stray from. Usually these things are like a TSD rally - you get a route book with tulips and odo readings. Except that the driver and nav get to switch places regularly.

Sounds like a great trip! Whitehorse is my home town, haven't been back there since I was single-digit age though. I still badly want to go. Please do post up some photos!

Is this like going spelunking after hearing The Death of Floyd Collins?

Wally, it's funny, but whenever I'm lucky enough to land a cool press trip - I find myself wishing that you guys were there with me to share it. Like last week, a surprise visit to Craig Jackson's home garage, where we were free to wander around and drool to our heart's content... I kept thinking "damn, wish the GRM guys were here". Some of the auto media, particularly the young-smart-ass-cynics who shall remain nameless... seem to feel it's a threat to their coolness if they show any sign of being impressed, or even having fun. It's a blast when the people you're with are enthusiasts though.

I leave bright and early tomorrow morning for Vancouver, then to Whitehorse. Can't wait - apparently the Italians are a hoot.

"On the front of this forum, near the top, you will find a posting that could ensure all of us are with you for every writting adventure!" The Grand Tursimo Racing League?"

    No, the other front...
When I saw you writting, "wish me luck" I hoped it was about that on the front because I do not think you would need luck. I suspect you have the skill.
