Let's assume you wanted to do videos (you're working on a restoration project or something) ala YouTube.  Is there a way to do it, perhaps make a nickel for the traffic you generate and not pay out the nose for the privilege?  What are the recommendations for where to post videos for the benefit of anyone interested?

Youtube is what it is for a reason. The only way to make money is to do what Motor Trend did and build up a large following and then hope to convince your followers to follow you off of youtube and to your own site where you own everything. I'm curious to know if that's working out for Motor Trend too. Starting from scratch anyplace else is basically a non starter because nobody else has the traffic that youtube does.

Instagram will allow up to 60 seconds of video, but again you'd have to have a sizeable following to make anything. They're making more money off of you than you would make off of them.

vimeo, daily motion.

A lot of people seem to be adding Patreon links to everything including their youtube descriptions as a way of getting paid, so there's that as well. It's not easy. Seems like you have to be extremely dumb and obnoxious to really make money from videos these days.

I'm pretty sure the answer is, umm, YouTube. There's no charge to put videos up, and once you have a certain level of traffic you get a cut of the ad revenue.

Youtube is the big one. Facebook has a program too but both of them are paying out way less then they used to which is why you're seeing the Patron push.

There's another platform out there that actually pays pretty well if you're willing to ignore (or indulge in) some of the other content they host. Let's just say their content guidelines are a bit lax.

Yep if you're looking to make money off your videos, there's no free lunch. YouTube was more lucrative in the early days when they were trying to build up a userbase, but now that the userbase is built, those days are over.

If you're not looking to make money, YouTube is fine, so is Vimeo and others (well not Facebook because it's too much of a PITA for non-users IMO). If you want to stick it to the man, maybe try DTube.

You'll need to log in to post.
