The Exomotive Exocet is a newly developed kit car derived from the 1990-2005 Mazda Miata that is engineered and manufactured in Atlanta, Georgia.

Exomotive takes an unorthodox approach by utilizing modern manufacturing technologies to achieve a level of quality and precision previously unavailable from small-run kit car companies.

The Exocet's build philosophy is to remove the Miata's unibody, panels, and interior from everything that makes it go, turn or stop. Then, adorn what remains with a lightweight and rigid tubular chassis.

The result? A weight shaving of more than 800 pounds that amplifies every aspect of performance. With less mass, your vehicle accelerates quicker, turns sharper, and stops shorter. Finalized cars are weighing in between 1,400 to 1,600 pounds depending on components, and maintaining near 50/50 weight distribution.

Primary kit highlights:

  • Using one model donor car minimizes frustration from sourcing parts. Drivetrain; undercarriage, suspension and brakes; steering column and rack; pedal box and hydraulic assembly; cabling and plumbing; engine management, electronics, gauges, and wiring all come from one car.

  • Opens the door for the "at home builder" to attain super car performance without a taking out a new mortgage. Maximum dollar to performance factor.

  • Abundant aftermarket selection and support; virtually any Miata performance product can be adapted to the Exocet.

  • Minimal consumables budget. Less weight means less wear.

  • 50 state street legal and easily insurable.

Think of this car as the ultimate running start:

This frame is the "sport" variant, and has an additional roll hoop diagonal with harness bar. It has also been upgraded with welded-in 18 gauge steel floors for extra cabin protection.

Both the frame and undercarriage have been powder coated by Industrial Powder Coatings, with an 80% hyper-chrome chassis finish and a satin black undercarriage coating for premium aesthetics and longevity.

Donor components were sourced from a 70k mi. 2001 LS Mazda Miata which spent its life in salt-free Southern California. This is the newest evolution of Miata that is compatible with the Exocet.

  • VVT equipped 1.8 liter 10:1 BP motor. Compression/leakdown tested.

  • 6 speed close-ratio gearbox

  • 4.10 final drive Torsen limited-slip differential

All major servicing has been performed:

Water pump and gaskets, timing belt and idler/tensioner pulleys, F/R main seals, camshaft seals, thermostat and gasket, valve cover gasket, alternator belt, NGK spark plugs, Mazdaspeed Competition engine mounts, fuel filter, shifter gasket, Mazdaspeed aluminum shifter bushing, and K&N hi-flow air filter.

Other highlights:

  • Energy Suspension Urethane master control arm and differential bushing set.

  • Exedy Stage 1 Clutch kit.

  • HyTech Exhaust turn-down race muffler. An abbreviated and minimal high-flow exhaust setup. Slip fitting allows for further muffling accommodations if desired. Aggressive note is in accordance with the open cockpit experience.

  • OEM unmodified/un-cut wiring harness repackaged for Exocet fitment. Minimal wiring mess.

  • Light steering rack de-power (reversible).

This car will start first turn of the key, drive in/out of your driveway, and up and down your trailer.

What you don't have to think about:

  • Heavy lifting and major component interfacing

  • Special tooling and hardware sourcing

  • Drivetrain maintenance and service

  • Frame and undercarriage powder coating and transport

  • Control arm bushing removal and installation ( x 22 bushings)

  • Wiring/Electronics

  • Plumbing/Line routing

Decisions you'll get to make:

  • Wheels and tires (4 x spare tires included for transit/storage)

  • Aluminum panel finish/color

  • Suspension upgrades

  • Seats, harnesses, controls

  • Cooling (comes with OEM 2001 radiator)

The assembly of an Exocet is a clear-cut procedure. However, like any project with many pieces, it demands time and attention to cross the finish line smoothly. Acquisition, transportation, dismantling, and disposal of the donor car are involved processes with many small variables and complications. Starting from ground zero can be a rewarding endeavor, but you will be met with many minor frustrations and expenses along the way. This car should circumvent many of those headaches. With few aftermarket parts, it provides an excellent platform to build upon. It can be viewed as an unmodified and well maintained Miata ready for personalization.

Lastly, like most high quality limited run products there is a wait time: currently 20 to 22 weeks for a kit unpainted. Factor a bit more time and $600 to $900 for powder coating prior to shipment, dependent on color. If you are intending on constructing an Exocet in the near future, this is an easy jump on the 2015 track season with the major hassles defeated.

Correct Keith,

This kit was ordered without bodywork. Cheapest entry price to a driveable car and allows the new owner to choose if they run the body, gel coat color/finish, even the new full carbon option!

We are all familiar. The car was designed with input from this site, and has hundreds of pages of data here.

New guy telling Keith Tanner about Exocets... Now I'm really confused!

In reply to SnowMongoose:

Might not be the fastest at the track but until one of those little things blows, probably the most fun. I would really enjoy the giant power slides at 7 mph.

Lol at the markup handling error of GRM's site. Open bold tag FTL.

This sentence should fix it.

Edit: nope. #BreakTheInternet

It comes with 4 spares for transportation ease and to keep costs down. Also, this allows the new owner to choose wheel size and styling. Despite it looking a bit silly I figured a track-oriented community would be able to appreciate that. After all, it's a snug fit loading my other car with 13x9's and 10"+ tires into my enclosed trailer. Sometimes I use 4x spares

I apologize for the confusion. I've posted this car on a few other sites and assumed there was a chance that not every GRM reader had stumbled upon the Exocet write-up as of yet!

Keith and I spoke trackside at MRLS last year. I am fully aware of his unrivaled wealth of knowledge and seat time in Miata and exo-based projects.

He asked a reasonable question (to clarify for interested buyers) and I simply spelled out the options.

This is a generation "3c" frame, so it's not ancient. Current frames (I'm guessing the last ~20) are "3d". The biggest difference is the center tunnel, but the aluminum panels are also revised for easier installation. 3c+ frames have the extra bump clearance rear tophats for those that insist on ludicrous amounts of low.

Every US-built Exocet has gone out with 0.095" DOM roll structure. There have been no major updates that affect safety, fatigue, or stiffness.
