Anything special to look for with those? I'm looking at one tomorrow as I need a 'daily driver' bike so I can insure my classic bikes with Hagerty[1]...

[1] None of the non-classic companies I talked to will insure them as they're grey imports and they don't "do" grey import bikes anymore. Of course buying another bike is such a suboptimal outcome...

I own one. They are nice. No real problem areas. They are hard on chains and rear tires (85ft-lbs of torque & fairly heavy). 2nd gear can get weak and skip out. Mine has 27k miles on it (owned since 14k) and has had no issues. They do have 6-piston calipers on them which will get gummed up with brake dust and stick if they are not cleaned before being pushed back in for brake changes.

All around an outstanding bike. They look so 80's and perform so good. The ecentric rear chain adjuster is awesome, and other then a huge allen key required for changing tires they don't really need any special tools. I really like mine however it's for sale for crazy cheap as I have a baby now and just don't feel riding is worth it to me right now.

Funny, your description almost matches the one of the bike I'm looking at tomorrow. Same reason for sale, too.

You don't happen to be in West Sacramento, are you?

Good to hear that they don't seem to have any inherent weaknesses apart from 2nd gear.

That's a very good price - the one I'm looking at tomorrow is a 2002 advertised at $3.5k with KBB retail being $3.3k... OTOH it's green and we know they're faster .

A friend of mine in the UK has one and loves it, I'm just a little concerned that it's too big for me. OTOH the last 'daily' bike I had was a BMW R1150RT and that's not a small bike either.

That is the only Kawasaki I have ever liked. There were about 38,000 of them at Mid Ohio last weekend for the vintage days. Kawasaki was the featured marque.

I love the looks of this one - I know it is a engine swap, but the tail really makes that bike look great

Well, I looked at it and like it...

Given that it doesn't have a main stand, do you check the oil level by holding up the bike vertically or while it's resting on the side stand. 'cos if it's the latter, there didn't seem to be much oil in the sight glass...

Yep balance the bike and look. if these bikes had a center stand they would border on perfect. They have two horizontal bolts in the swarm so a rear stand works easily.
