After a hard ride today, my fun was cut short by a nice hole in my rear tire. Tire Slime worked well enough to get me back to the trailer, but I can't get the tire up to pressure without the hole leaking. The hole looks like it was made with a 1/4" drill bit.

Has anyone used a tire plug kit? How permanent are they? Can a tire store fix such a thing permanently?

We had an old Suzuki 230 from 1986. That thing got holes in the tires all the time. We plugged them with the same stuff we'd use to fix tractor tires. It would come in a kit with a reamer, a looped rod, rubber plugs (looked like small black Twizzlers), and contact cement. Following the directions, we never had any problems. When we finally got new tires, one had over fifteen plugs in it. I think we used to get ours at a farm supply store.

That tire is a perfect candidate for a plug. I have seen the kits at sears hardware as well

Get a "plug an patch" It's a patch with a plug coming out the center surounded by a metal cone so you can push it through the hole and then pull the cone through with pliers thus leaves a nice patch on the inside and a plug to keep diry out of the hole.

    found'em http://www.patchrubber.com/tire_repair/14508.html

Plugged many an ATV tire with an off the shelf plug kit from Wally World. I have one plug on a TRX450 that has been in for 9 years without leaking! Yes I know I need new tires.

in an ATV tire, a plug will work fine... you're not really doing anything high speed on them.

In the automotive field, plugs are seen as temporary while patches are a permanent fix. And in automotive use, sidewalls normally cannot be patched.
