Found a '82 Yamaha Seca 750 for sale locally for cheap that of course needs work to get running well (carb problems). I've been half looking for an old school bike to mess around with but will finally have the time to do stuff since I'm graduating in a couple weeks, and this fits the bill in terms of being old and cheap. A quick google search didn't give me much info beyond the basic specs so..

Good stories? Bad stories? Story stories? Durable bike or unreliable money pits?

Just like any other 80's UJM. Pretty simple stuff. Heavy, and not terribly quick. Don't expect Honda-like parts support, but you can get pretty much anything you'd need.

I rode one when they first came out and was much impressed, but that shaft drive leaves me cold. IIRC the speedo/tach is early "digital" and hugely expensive to replaced.

I had an '81. Good bike. Really quick for its time, it was the first production 750 to run an 11 second 1/4 mile. Solid feeling overall but the shaft drive was disconcerting in sporty situations if you rolled the throttle on in a corner. Otherwise it was a pretty cool bike. Mine had the 'anti dive', when you hit the front brakes it changed the front fork compression valving so the nose wouldn't drop so quick. The speedo's digital part was LCD displays in the middle, if it barfs yeah I'm sure it could get pricey.
