1957 Porsche 356A GT/GT Carrera Speedster

Jerry Charlup, Stamford CT

Porsche Class

Acquired in 1983, its missing original 4-cam motor was found in 2003. The Porsche Museum Book “Carrera: History of the 4-cam Motor” lists this Speedster as a steel bodied GT with a GT 4-cam motor, one of only 165 356/356A Carrera Speedsters ever built. 87 had GT motors and only 31 of these were steel bodied making this car very rare.

Originally delivered in 1957 to California racer Jimmy Moore, a Hollywood Film Editor, his successful racing, during 1957 to 1959, of this Speedster is fully documented.

This is a "double barn find" given finding the original 4-cam motor and later the racing history. This Speedster story was written up in Excellence in June 2014.

The Speedster has won many prestigious awards including the Barry Rilliet Laguna Seca Award in the Carmel by the Sea Concours on Ocean Avenue in 2015 and was displayed at the 2018 Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI in the 70th Anniversary Chopard Heritage Display. It has been invited to many Concours including Amelia Island (Twice), Greenwich and Pinehurst.

This Speedster is regularly driven to many events.

This Speedster was invited to the 2020 Audrain Concours d'Elegance which of course was cancelled.

Car:  1962 Porsche 356 B S90 Sunroof Coupe

Owner:  Gerry Curts

Location:  Tampa, Florida

Proposed Class(es):  Porsche and/or Sports and GT Cars (1960-1969)

Details:  This car was purchased 6 years ago and went thru a 5 year full restoration.  The original owner was a Dentist and his wife living in Hawaii.  They took delivery under the Porsche Tourists Delivery Program at the Sonauto dealership in Paris, France, on March 28, 1962.  The car was delivered with 22 factory options as well documented in the Kardex.  Virtually all the options were missing when I purchased the car.  It was a daunting task to find most of these missing items, but original authentic parts were ultimately located, purchased, and restored; many were found in Europe.  The Dentist’s wife was especially fond of the color of the water in the lagoon near their home, so she had paint mixed in Hawaii to match that color.  The paint was then sent to the Porsche factory and the car was painted with the owner’s supplied paint.  This restoration was un-compromisingly focused on restoring the car exactly as it was originally delivered in 1962.  It is a 100% numbers matching car.

The majority of the 100-point restoration was performed by 356-expert Roy Smalley of Eurowerks in Campbell, TX. The original instruments were fully refurbished by Hollywood Speedometer of Hollywood, CA. Chrome work and plating was entrusted to Christensen Plating Works of Vernon, CA. 1967 Porsche 911 S Soft Window Targa

Joseph and Shella Salvo

Newport Beach, CA

Classes: Porsche & Sports & GT 1960 - 1969

Concours Sponsor - San Marino Motor Classic (SMMC)

In 1965, Porsche introduced the 911 to replace the 356 and the 911 went on to be, arguably, the most successful car design in the world as it is still used today. In 1967, Porsche introduced the first "S" model which for the 900 series of Porsche completed the line in the same manner as the 356 (Normal, Super and Carrera). The 911 S had all the equipment of the previous 911, plus many new goodies, plus the 160-bhp engine and appropriately improved brakes and suspension. These improvements garnered an additional sales premium of over $1,000 versus a standard 911, or approximately $7,231 retail, expensive but it is a Porsche. Road & Track's 911 S summary in 1967 was "a superb GT car...everything a Porsche should be - and more..."

1967 was also the first year for the new "Targa" Top. Porsche needed a replacement for the phenomenally successful 356 convertible, but they were very concerned about pending US Regulations concerning convertibles. So, Porsche designed their new convertible with a built-in roll over hoop and covered it with a decorative stainless-steel strip. Porsche then affixed a soft window to the rear of the car so it could be "unzipped" and dropped to make the car a convertible with a roll over hoop. In 1967, the soft window was standard, and the hard window was an option. In 1968, the hard window was standard and the soft window an option. And by the early 1970’s the soft window had all but disappeared.

Also, of note is for 1967 and 1968 the 911 had a short wheel base and from 1969 on a long wheel base.

This car was originally imported by Volkswagen Pacific Inc. in Culver City CA in 1967. The car was delivered to Anderson & Amich and Chick Iverson (the owner of the first Orange County Porsche Dealership). Chick used the car for 2 years as his personal car and later sold it to Jack Howard Wells on November 15, 1969 for the sum of $6,912.00.

In August 2017, the Salvo's acquired the Porsche, it was all matching numbers and came with the Original Owner's Manual, Tools, Jack, License Plates, all the Documentation including Finance Documents, Maintenance Receipts and even some Vintage Photographs.

This 1967 Porsche 911 S Soft Window Targa is 1 of 483 built and all matching numbers (500160). Chick Iverson ordered the car in Special Order Silver Metallic (96024) paint with an optional Webasto Heater (006-627). The car was produced on 2/8/1967 with engine #961228, transmission #104308 (901/02), Black Leatherette/B interior and Dunlop Tires (165/15). An interesting side bar is Porsche was having challenges with the Silver Metallic paint in 1967 and had chosen NOT to paint cars in that specific color. Chick was able to get Porsche to paint his car in the difficult Silver Metallic making this car an extremely rare car out of the limited number of just 483 produced.

Restoration

This 1967 Porsche 911 S Soft Window Targa (SWT) received a 22-month frame off, nut and bolt Concours Restoration to Factory Original by Car Parc USA - Early 911 Specialists in Costa Mesa, CA. For all restorations Car Parc consults Porsche Kardex/Build Sheet for accuracy. For restoration, the car was disassembled and extensively photographed and categorized. The car was media blasted and then fitted to a Celette frame table with correct Porsche Short Wheelbase fixtures to properly fit panels. When necessary replacement panels are sourced, and a great deal of time is taken to perfect the body “gaps”. The body is prepped for paint on the rotisserie and painted using epoxy primer and single stage Glasurit paint applied in the original Silver Metallic color.

The engine compartment, luggage compartment, bottom, underside, inside fenders and inside of doors are all painted with specially blended undercoating to replicate the factory finish. The dash is painted satin black and Wurth Wax oil is applied to all hollow sections of the car for added protection against rust.

The engine was completely dismantled and chemically cleaned. The casing’s line bore was professionally checked and kept standard. The magnafluxed crankshaft including flywheel and clutch are balanced. New pistons, rings, bearings, valves, valve guides, valve seats, timing chains, guides and tensioners, seals, oil hoses with correct 1967 braided lines are installed, and the oil reservoir is chemically cleaned. A new clutch plate, cover and release bearing are installed. Engine tin is powder coated black. The transmission is disassembled, chemically cleaned, and fully rebuilt. The suspension is powder coated black; A-arms, trailing arms, sub frames, etc. The steering rack and pinion are rebuilt. New ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, etc., etc., etc. New shock absorbers and inner/outer wheel bearings. Brake calipers are rebuilt, and new solid and flexible brake lines are installed. New vented brake rotors, brake pads and tires. Correct for 1967, original date matched 15 x 4.5” Fuchs have been refinished by Harvey Weidman and wrapped in period correct Pirelli Cinturato tires.

The interior is completely reupholstered by a specialized shop and installed by Car Parc. All gauges were restored by Palo Alto Gauge and installed by Car Parc.

Important Numbers: Engine # 961228 Trans # 104308 (901/02) Production Completion Date - 2/8/67

Optional Equipment Per the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity & Kardex: Sonderlackierung (Special Paint Silberm - Silver Metallic - 96024) - Websato Heater (006 - 627) - Dunlap Tires (165/15).

Car: 1955 Porsche 550 RS Spyder tribute

Owner: Edward Ericson Jr.

Location: Joppa, MD

Proposed Class: Sport & GT Cars (1946-1959)(?)

I bought this unbuilt Thunder Ranch kit out of a Connecticut pole barn in 2017 and decided to make as period correct as possible, modeling it after 550-0051 and 550-0060. I sourced 914 gauges and had them rebuilt and refaced to 550 spec, bought reproduction barberpole vinyl, hand-formed and riveted the aluminum interior and underpan, fabricated frame extensions for working jack points, manifolds for the Autopulse fuel pumps, custom pedals, a fuel tank cover, working turn-key engine cover latches and dozens of other details not usually seen on replicas.

I budgeted a year to see it through; it took three.

  • 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo

Owner:  Richard Papy

Location:  Savannah, GA

Class:  Porsche

This very special Porsche 930 was part of Porsche's Special Wishes Program.  The color is Talbot Yellow with interior to match.  The seats, door cards, and shift boot are yellow leather along with matching yellow carpet.  It also has the rare 'Turbo' graphics decal that was an option in the 70's.  It's truly one of a kind.  In 2018 it won the Porsche USA Corporate Award at Werks Reunion at Amelia Island and gets major attention where ever it goes.  It has matching numbers 3.3 litre motor and transmission.  Parts of it have been restored and some are original but has not been modified in any way from the original configuration.

1970 Porsche 914-6  - European Delivery

Owners: Scott Kuhne

Phoenix, AZ

Class: Porsche

This Porsche 914-6 was originally delivered in Europe and brought over to the USA in the late 70's. After arriving it was mostly used for weekend track days. After a small fender bender the car was parked in the late 70's where it sat partially disassembled for 38 years. Discovered parked in the back of a repair shop in Southern California I acquired the car and then set out on a 4 year full restoration. The car was completely taken apart and every component painstakingly restored and then reassembled. This numbers matching 20,000 kilometer vehicle looks and drives like new.

1983 Porsche 944

Kirk Woelffer, Raleigh NC

Cars of Porsche

I grew up in the 80's, and my dad had two Porsche 924's, both green.  They were awesome!  For my eleventh birthday party, my dad drove myself and four buddies to McDonalds for ice-cream cones.  Two of us rode in the hatch!!

So, as a grownup in 2017, it was time to go back to the 80's!  I found this 1983 Pasadena Yellow 944 with the second owner in Pennsylvania, and I had to take a look.  Needless to say, it was love at first sight!  Just sitting in it took me back to my eleventh birthday, probably because it is a bone-stock time capsule.  However, it does have a rear turbo valance that the original owner put on it.  Didn't everyone want a TURBO in the 80's?!  LOL!!  Surely, he couldn't resist the urge. :)

My childhood dream arrived by truck a few weeks later.  I jumped right in.  It was perfect!  My daughters buckled up in the backseat (safety first!), and we drove off to Dunkin Donuts for a snack.

The trip was not to McDonalds, and it was not bouncing around in the hatch, but it was close enough, and it was totally awesome! :)

1989 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet

owned by Vince Hendrix

Fort Collins, Colorado.

Porposed classes: Porsche  Class and Cars of the 80's & 90's.

In the summer of 2009 I was really intrigued by the Porsche 944 and 968 cabriolet models which I came across at a couple of car shows, but didn’t see around otherwise. After doing a lot of research I narrowed my wish list down to the rarest of these models in regard to the production numbers, and how many were imported into the US. A 944 Cabriolet model which was previewed at Frankfurt in 1985 and announced for production in 1987, didn’t actually show up until the spring of 1989. These first year 1989 944 S2 Cabriolets imported for the US market, were limited to 16 cars. After searching for over a year, I had been using a tactic for several months that involved looking on Craigslist in major cities across the US. In July of 2011 my search in this manner was rewarded when I found an advertisement in Seattle, Washington listing a 1989 944 2 door Targa with a 2.5 L inline 4 engine, and 5 speed manual transmission. I knew from my research that no such car existed, so I decided to check it out further. Although this dealer had several Porsches on his lot, it was obvious he didn’t know what he had. After looking at the pictures of the car and running the VIN number, I was pretty sure that I had found the elusive 89 Cabriolet. On August 19, 2011 the purchase was completed, and I became the proud owner of a 1989 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet in Guards red with black interior. Over the last 9 years I have refurbished the mechanical parts and detailed the car to its current condition, while trying to maintain the car in its original stock condition. The car has 129,738 miles and is completely stock; with original carpets, seatbacks, door panels, uncracked dash, original Blaupunkt Reno AM/FM Cassette/equalizer, design 90 wheels in black chrome, tool kit/tire pump and spare.  Very rare low production first year 944 Cabriolet.
