Photo Uploading Help

When uploading images to the web, the size and type of file you choose is important. Taking a minute to make sure your photos are sized correctly and are the right file type makes uploading them easier, helps the site run better and is just plain nice for the other site visitors. Here are a few tips to get the best results:

  • Make sure your image is in JPG format. GIF images tend to be larger for photos, and are likely to make the photo look jagged when it's resized for a thumbnail. BMP and other formats are entirely unsuited for the Web.
  • Set the resolution at 72 DPI. Anything higher is not noticeable on screen and might prevent the photo from displaying properly on the site.
  • We recommend a maximum width of 800 pixels and a maximum height of 600 pixels, at a resolution of 72 DPI. That translates to roughly 11 inches across and eight inches high, so the image will be easily large enough.

There are several ways to easily resize your images. Of course, graphics programs like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro feature powerful image-sizing tools, but there’s no shortage of simple, inexpensive solutions, too. Freeware/shareware programs like PIXresizer for Windows or iResizer are easy-to-use and helpful, and there are also free online tools such as Shrink Pictures.
