New car reviews » 2008 Volvo C30 Version 2.0

Better than: Volvo C30
But not as good as: Mazdaspeed 3
GRM Bang For The Buck Index: 77.22

We just had our hands on the slightly tweaked high-profile version of the C30, aptly dubbed version 2.0 in Volvo-speak. It’s easy to see the changes between this version and the base model, since they conveniently painted the aero bits in a color that contrasts with the main body.

We really liked the more aggressive look of the 2.0, and a slightly bigger wheel-and-tire package promise improved handling thanks to a slightly larger footprint. However, we weren’t impressed with the fact that the 2.0 uses the exact same mechanical hardware and power output as the base model. But if you’re counting style points, version 2.0 might have just what it takes to get you into a C30.

I spent the weekend with this car and came to see the beauty. It’s certainly quick enough, has great seats, and looks awesome. I could live with this one, which is saying a lot. I even liked the optional automatic gearbox, which I guess is really saying a lot. I’m not sure why I didn’t connect with the other C30 we had, but this one captured my heart.

The C30 is a great daily driver. I have a 22-mile one-way commute and get 28-30 mpg on mid-grade with moderately vigorous use of the right pedal. The car is quick, but somewhat soft (body roll) at the autox. I have other vehicles to drive fast so I just enjoy the ride and great looks.

I have no ideas how people get 28-30 mpg out of C30’s, I’m averaging around 24 with a best of around 26mpg. On my 2,200 miles around Europe (Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, England and Wales) I got 22.9mpg, but that included 130mph Autobhan balsts and a few laps round some little place you may have hear about, the Nurburgring :) Compared to the Mazdaspeed 3 I think this vehicle is the real world hands down winner. I love it. It’s quick, not fast, supremely comfortable, a real head turner. The ride/handling compromise is just amazing, it adsorbs massive potholes with barely a thud, but the turn in excellent. Yes the MS3 may be quicker and handle a little better, but it’s harsh, loud and on Michigan potholes just painful in comparison to the Volvo. The Euro delivery is the only way to buy a new car as well.

What's this?

If you're reading this, you've probably seen these odd links with funny names somewhere on the site and want to know what they're all about. Well, prepare to feel a bit more Net savvy. Those links are what the geeks call "social networks."

Social networking sites allow you to store and share links and pages across the Internet. It's like taking your bookmarks list and being able to see it from any computer.

Even better, social networks allow you to steer friends, relatives, colleagues and pretty much anyone else to the cool stuff you've found, so they have something better to do online than watching the skateboarding squirrel video on YouTube for the thirtieth time. You're making the world a better place.

The only catch is that while all the social networks are free, you do have to register. Each site has a slightly different focus, so take a look through the links and see which service suits you best.
