2020 Lexus ES 350 Ultra Luxury new car reviews

[Editor's Note: Photography features a 2020 ES 350 F-Sport]

Yes, the ES 350 does share a platform with the Toyota Avalon, but it isn’t totally fair to write off the ES as a nicer or fancier version of the Avalon.

Instead, it may be more appropriate to view the Lexus as the more athletic twin. Sure, it’s nearly the same thing, but this one is encouraged to show its sportier side first, and then comfort second.

All ES 350 trims come equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 that is rated at 302 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent to the ground through the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic.

Although we can’t confirm that the estimated 0-60 time of 6.6 seconds is true, we do know that the ES is more than willing to spin its front tires if you get a little too aggressive with the gas pedal.

At any rate, we were given an Ultra Luxury trim that, perhaps not surprisingly, was pretty well loaded with things like a heads-up display, heated and ventilated 14-way power seats and an 1800-Watt Mark Levinson sound system.

As for pricing, a no-frills-added Ultra Luxury ES will set you back $43,750, but tack on the options our loaner had and you are looking at $54,050.

The Lexus ES line has always existed as a fancy Camry or whatever. Fancy, yes, but not sharing the driving dynamics enjoyed by the competition from Germany. Draw your own conclusions regarding front- vs. rear-wheel drive.

But with the latest update, the ES now has a worthy chassis. Is it a BMW-fighter? Not sure about that, but the steering no longer lacks feel. The bones are now there.

My TL;DR: If you liked past versions of the ES, then you’ll enjoy this one. But if previous generations have left you cold, then it might be time for a second look.
