The Global MX-5 Cup will adopt the more powerful, higher-revving engine found in the 2019 Mazda MX-5, and Tom Long, chief development driver for the series, just shook down the new race car at Virginia International Raceway.

“The additional power from the new SKYACTIV 2.0-liter engine is noticeable right away,” he said, “pulling hard all the way to its new, higher redline. I think the current Global MX-5 Cup car owners will enjoy the upgrade. It has the same great chassis and handling characteristics, but now with an added punch and a larger, more usable rev range.”

While additional testing is scheduled, the 2019 Global MX-5 Cup car is available exclusively from Long Road Racing. Teams who are planning to run previous models in the 2019 season can purchase an upgrade kit from Mazda Motorsports.

Now that is interesting. These cars run a different ECU so they probably won't easily adapt to the street cars, but you can bet Mazda Motorsports is hearing from Miata nerds right about now.

There is a great Slipangle podcast where they talk to Longroad about developing the cars. Neat stuff. I hope the class gains speed at the club level.

Agreed. LRR is doing great work with these. They're also really helpful when you call them up.
