The third-generation 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 has been announced at the 2019 North American International Auto Show, becoming the most powerful street-legal car Ford has ever made. Going on sale later this fall, the GT500 is powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter aluminum alloy flat-crank V8 that produces in excess of 700 horsepower. The only choice to send this power to the rear wheels is through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission—a choice many will find controversial—which features a number of selectable driving modes, including drag and track modes, and the ever-popular line-lock feature.
Along with its V8 engine and dual-clutch transmission, the GT500’s drastic aerodynamics, active suspension, and powerful braking systems have all been developed from Ford GT and Mustang GT4 racing programs, allowing the GT500 to rocket from 0-60 mph in “the mid-three-second” range, and can blast down the quarter-mile in less than 11 seconds.
At the very least, these numbers are impressive…
