Ford is finally releasing a second take on their GT40-inspired supercar and it’s a doozy. They revealed the prototype this morning at the Detroit Auto Show. It’s been completely retooled to replace its almost decade-old predecessor. It still retains the mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and that iconic nose, but honestly is a very different car beyond that.

Aerodynamic efficiency is the heart and soul of this project’s design. The GT now takes on a teardrop shape with the driver in the middle, coupled with fully active aerodynamic components to improve braking and turning.

As with all new Fords, this generation will be EcoBoosted. The twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 which will be found in the car is reported to be the most powerful EcoBoost powerplant ever and comes with all be benefits of its EcoBoost cousins. It’s based on the same engines run in the IMSA Tudor Championship in 2014.

But that’s not it. They’ve made the whole car much lighter by incorporating carbon fiber and other lightweight composites. They say that with its newer, lighter frame, this GT will boast one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car.

And on that bombshell, the automotive world has been thrust into catch-up mode. This latest and greatest Ford GT will go into production in 2016.

I like the twin turbo V6 idea, sounds ready for a homologated race series

However ive heard nightmare stories of the previous car's quality/reliability the extra complexity of this doesn't bode well for potential owners lol
