Mazda is about to deliver their 100th MX-5 Cup car, and the next run will see some upgraded equipment: motorsports-specific gearbox, motorsports-specific engine brackets, differential bushing inserts, fuel pump-out kit, and ECU hardware and software updates.

A price increase will accompany the updated equipment, with the cost of the cars going from $53,000 to $58,900. “As a loyalty offer, any of the original 108 MX-5 Cup customers have through Friday, September 16, 2016 to purchase additional cars at the launch price,” Mazda said in their release.

“An old adage is that racing improves the breed, and in just the first few months of racing, we have made a few significant upgrades to ensure that the car remains a great value for many years to come,” explained John Doonan, director of motorsports, Mazda North American Operations. “To minimize the need for mid-season rebuilds, we have switched to a motorsports-specific gearbox. While it uses many of the stock components, it is a track-only part. Likewise we have redesigned the engine brackets to better withstand the constant high-speed pounding that is beyond anything seen on the road. The bottom line, is that this car is even better than it was just a few months earlier and we expect to see even more of them on tracks around the world in the years to come.”

Considering the problems they're also having with production gearboxes, at best, this announcement comes across as more than a little ironic.

"... the next run will see some upgraded equipment..."

That's got to make buyers of the previous batch real happy.
