The name almost sounds Japanese, but it’s German. Styling Garage gave the world the 1000SGS sedan–said to be twice as good as the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL that it was based upon.

A 1000SGS could feature things like custom paint, custom interior, custom bumpers, custom wheels, custom stereos, custom retro nose treatments and more. From 1000SEL.com: “Usually a full-option Mercedes-Benz 500SEL (W126) was used as a starting point and then all the options could be added. The customer could basically order whatever he wanted, even options that weren't on the list, as long as bills were paid. Styling-Garage made most of the 1000SGS conversions prior to their first bankruptcy in 1986. How many were made is unknown.”

Good grief. I remember these from the "day". They were horrible then and as "horrible" today. Conspicuous consumption at it's worst.

It's actually impressive how seemingly everything they made was hideous. You'd think every once in a while they'd have accidentally made something that looks cool.....

I was actually contemplating it on my Miata after you posted this David. I think it could be possible, but I certainly don't have the ambition to do it!
