LeGrand Mk 18 : Frame and Engine Work Apr 16, 2009

We finished welding the LeGrand’s rear framework to support the new differential. Afterward, we gave it a coat of POR-15 paint. POR-15 provides a nice, tough finish that is theoretically impervious to fuels and solvents.

Next up, we’ll rework the KZ850 motor so that it displaces a full 1000cc—that’s the legal limit for our car in B Modified. Our plan is to replace the cylinder block and pistons with larger-diameter bores.

How thick is the POR-15? I've had a couple of people tell me to not put anything too heavy on the frame as it could hide developing cracks from sight. Put on just enough to protect the metal, but no more.

It's actually pretty thin, about as thick as a combination of primer and topcoat, but not as thick as a powdercoat. I like that if I need to fix something, I can just touch it up with a brush. Also, since it's nice and fresh, I will be able to see cracks a little easier. I'm starting to strip the paint off the rest of the cage, there are at least 5 layers on there. yuck.

Actually, yes. BMod allows pretty much anything given the weight/displacement limits for engine work. The head was already ported and had stiff valve springs and APE titanium retainers. I got a set of APE 410 cams and I need to clearance the head for them to fit. Now, this is all just jerking around as I could also just replace the entire KZ with a ZX10R….but I'm having fun dinking around with what amounts to the original engine for the car (for now)

Very cool, I love the simplicity and ease of access on those old aircooled bike engines, I can completely understand the desire to wiggle a few more hp out of it.

I've used pour 15 fuel tank liner and it will plug a 1/4” hole. its pretty thick.
