LeGrand Mk 18 : Making Head(er)way Jan 13, 2010

The conversion from KZ1000 to ZX10r motive power has been progressing smoothly, but one big project, the exhaust system, has been looming on our to-do list. We’ve been debating whether to start from scratch with stainless tubing bends or modify the good mild-steel system that we already have.

We decided to modify what we had, since the system as a whole was quite nice. By using the mounting flanges from a Muzzy stainless header, we had a good head start on the project. They were cut down to fit with our current exhaust—we took off little bits here and there until we could just tack the pieces together. The result was a pretty quick conversion that will at least get us going. The header’s primary lengths and inner diameters were kept approximately the same, so the power should be at least as good as with a full Muzzy exhaust. Once it’s recoated, it’ll look beautiful.

Are the openings in the front of the ZX's airbox where the bike's ram air system used to go?

Yep. I'm thinking about adapting the cooling snorkel to ram some air into the top of the box.
