LeGrand Mk 18 : Ready to Roll! Jul 27, 2010

Our LeGrand is now sitting in our garage on its new-to-us trailer. We’ve gotten the replacement engine buttoned back together after some shenanigans with the clutch. We installed the pull-rod on the wrong side of the sprung center hub, which wound up costing us a test day in Ocala. The good news is that it’s fixed. We even took it to an event this past weekend in DeLand, finishing third overall and ninth on index without driving particularly well.

The hardest part was deciding what to tow it with. Just about anything in our fleet (except the Sachs MadAss) can pull the car and trailer’s 1150 pounds. The tongue weight is actually comparable to the little tire trailer that we use behind the MINI. Our Honda Odyssey gets close to 19mpg with the new trailer set up, versus 9 or less with the enclosed. That’ll save us $400 on the trip to Nationals alone.

Next up, we’ll be working on some shock tuning, aero improvements and getting a set of fresh Hoosiers for our trip to the Solo National Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska—which is only a little over a month away at this point.

Seeing it on a trailer behind the Impreza makes me wonder if the wing would make enough downforce to create lift on the tongue at highway speeds…

Per Schroeder:
Absolutely, but it doesn't seem to be a problem at under 70mph. It's creating downforce, but not enough to effect the towing too much. I'm going to stow the wing for my trip to Nebraska…if nothing else, it'll help mileage.

WOW That 2nd run finish was hairy eh? Are the stabs at the throttle the driver or the bumps?

Per Schroeder:
that's real time. The bumps are making my foot come off the throttle…and then transition back to throttle is a little jump. Need to work on that part of my driving.

Yeah, thats what I figured. Looks like a blast, and looks tough on a rough surface

All that talk about safety in the mag and all I see are bare arms and hands. Shame.

Um, this is autocross on a 95 degree day. Not required nor desired.

The new TDI should be able to tow it. ;)
