Apr 19, 2012 update to the Porsche 911 Carrera project car

Porsche Idle Adjustment

Our Porsche is off the DL, but it still needed a tweak.
When all else fails, read the instructions.
Now our Porsche idles like it's supposed to.

We investigated further and saw that our idle position switch was simply out of adjustment. We made the fix, and the car now idles at a cool 800 rpm.

Our 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera’s idle seemed kind of high. It would hover right around 1200, while the factory spec is closer to 800.

Vacuum leak? Bent throttle arm? ECU issues? Wacky airflow meter?

According to the Bentley manual, a 1200 rpm idle is a symptom of a bad idle switch. (See, sometimes it pays to read a book.)

We investigated further and saw that our idle position switch was simply out of adjustment. We made the fix, and the car now idles at a cool 800 rpm.
