May 2, 2012 update to the Lincoln Mark VII project car

Protecting Our Paint

Our artsy paint job ought to be protected from the elements.
We sourced a cover from Covercraft.
Even the required numbers got an artist's touch.
Perego has a penchant for forced perspective. We couldn't get it to quite turn out on camera, but when seen directly from the side the logo looks upright.
We asked Perego to take some cues from Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry murals.
The cover slips on super-easily, and it even has our logo printed on it.

After we had Perego paint our Lincoln crapcan racer during the infield festivities at the Rolex 24-hour race at Daytona International Speedway, we were impressed by the work. Sure, it looks slapdash and hasty—not a bad thing when the LeMons judges turn their scrutinizing eyes toward us—but it also speaks our name and has the hands of our readers on it, too. Naturally, we’re a little sentimental.

So we called up Covercraft to make a cover for us. It’s custom-made for the Lincoln’s shape and has an elastic band along the bottom. Perhaps surprisingly, it works with the side mirrors even though they’re off a Mitsubishi. If the weather’s not too windy, we can just slip the cover over it and not worry. If a storm’s rolling in, there are grommets and rope to cinch it down more securely.
