What’s That Smell?

Update by Per Schroeder to the Dodge Neon ACR project car
Mar 30, 2009

Now that our Neon is running around town, we decided to take it on a dirt road to see how it would behave in the rough stuff. After a few miles, we noticed an odd burning smell—even odder than the normal odd burning smell that the car often emanates. The battery light came on shortly thereafter, although the car continued to run fine.

We put a multi-meter on the the car and discovered that the alternator wasn’t charging. We removed the alternator and discovered that it had apparently shorted itself out and burned the end of the wiring harness. Yippee.

We sourced a new alternator from RockAuto.com for about $130. The car should be up and running again soon.
