Ride Rating

My beloved daily driver. Purchased in August of 2011, with a scant 21K miles on the odo, this was the lowest mileage W124 for sale in the country at the time. Even so, as anyone with an older Mercedes can attest, there was plenty of work that needed to be done. So far, I've done:

  • Lots of fluid changes - oil, transmission, coolant
  • R&R of HVAC blower motor
  • R&R of HVAC blower motor
  • New water pump
  • New serpentine belt
  • New valve cover gasket and related other stuff
  • New spark plugs (indexed, of course)
  • New battery
  • New voltage regulator
  • New over-voltage protection relay (a.k.a. "OVP")
  • Replacement cruise control/idle speed control brain (a.k.a. CC/ISC or "eGas") box
  • Replacement throttle body

Other fixes

It got a new radiator a few months ago. Now she purrs down the road, or sits in traffic, with the temp gauge right where it should be. I think I also forgot to mention that I put Michelin Primacy ...

Our default family workhorse.

I put a trailer hitch on it, for use with a bicycle rack. It's a great highway car. Fuel mileage isn't great, though. I get around 20mpg in pure city driving. On the highway, the best I've seen is a ...

Before the repaint

In summer of 2013, I pulled the trigger on having the entire car repainted. I chose Rocky's Auto Body, a small shop in rural NC. Trivia: Rocky does the paintwork on USA-delivered Ariel Atoms. He's also a Mercedes guy. These ...

With its stock wheels, and (mostly) original paint

A previous owner had gotten the top third of the car repainted…poorly. I eventually figured out that the original clearcoat must have failed, and was "fixed" from that pinstripe, up to the roof. Shoddy masking, plenty of overspray, and poor ...

As it was when I bought it

I found this car on cars.com, after looking for about three months for the "right" W124. Originally, I sought out either a wagon, or a diesel sedan. I found it difficult to find a nice example of either of those, ...
