1994 Mazda Protege LX

After months of searching for a BG Protege and deciding I'd take any BG model as long as it wasn't automatic or that horrible Tropic Emerald green, I found a screaming deal on a '94...automatic...in Tropic Emerald.

I bought it with a bad transmission (planning to swap out to a manual anyway). Still made the 30 mile drive home! Very clean otherwise. This will be a rallycrosser and daily driver.

Window vents.

I made some vents out of some scrap Plexiglas. The filter element isn't installed in this picture but hopefully this will give me some much needed airflow in the cabin and not allow the dust to get in during rallycrosses.

Harnesses!

Picked up two sets of Schroth Rallye 4 harnesses to keep me better planted in the stock seats. The seats are horrible still, but this should help until I can get a real seat. I wasn't looking for both the ...

I just realized I never posted any pictures of the car all kitted up. I'll have to add that on the main page. Kind of a late start but today was my first Rallycross of the season for me! Actually, ...

I mounted my poor man's rally tires (snows and tubes) on some BMW bottle caps ready for a late start to the rallycross season.

I took out the stock seats and replaced them with the Miata seats. A lot of people on other forums said it wasn't possible to mount them in a Protege. I really don't know why. Huge improvement over stock.

Today I finished up some of the final touches on the gearbox swap. I bled the clutch and filled the gearbox with oil. I didn't like or have the common fluid reservoir for the brake and clutch master cylinders Mazda ...

My brother got me some NB Miata seats that I'm going to try to use to replace the disgusting stock seats. The stock Protege seat bottom of the driver's seat had collapsed and the side bolsters are torn. They'll fit ...

After a lot more difficulty than I anticipated, the manual pedal assembly is in! I got new pedal pads from NAPA for a few bucks each so I installed those as well.

Game on

To escape the cold after working on the Protege, I built this set up to go with the PS3 and pedals/wheel my wife got me for Christmas. Other than the pedals and wheel, definitely done on a grassroots budget, free ...

You talk about wanting a Sonett. I talk about missing my Protege. Hrmmmm. If only my Sonett weren't so rusty. Its nice to see someone taking care of another BG. I'll have another someday.

So, did you have to drill new holes for the Miata seat brackets or did the brackets bolt right on where the old ones were!

Carson:
4Msfam, basically, I used some thin steel flat stock and bolted that to the Protege rails and then bolted the seat to the flat stock. If I remember correctly, there is about a 3" difference between the factory Protege rails to the Miata seats. It isn't quite as straightforward as it sounds but that's the gist. I'll see if I can get some pictures up.
