I bought this GTX in November, 2008, from Christian L. in Salt Lake City, UT. After moving cross-country twice since then, I finally started the rebuild on August 7th, 2010, for the $2010 GRM Challenge in October!

Capping the Gulf Coast [GTX] Oil Leak...

It was a good thing I made the detour to MT323's in Louisiana. We decided that the valve cover was sufficiently bolted down that we didn't change it, but did change the oil filler cap. That took care of most, ...

Houston, we have a problem

I actually made it to Houston and caught up with old friends. It was a much needed break from the road. A fellow GTXer and his wife in southern Louisiana offered me crash space the following night; Mark wanted to ...

Getting there is half the fun...

I am learning to trust my instincts. I didn't like the wob-wob-wob noise the car made. It turns out that the wheel bearings were going bad. Lacking time and tools to press new ones in, we simply swapped the good ...

There's the rub...

I spent a week driving the GTX...the screaming bearing on the alternator was too much to bear, so swapped the alternator off the old engine and hoped for the best. It's much quieter, fortunately. Unfortunately, the water pump started weeping, ...

Lessons learned

I was hoping to have the GTX on the road this weekend. Alas, it didn't happen, but I learned many valuable lessons... 1) You must provide enough beer to get the guys wrenching well, but not so much that they ...

All fired up!

Friday night, we drained off a little of the old gas to see what we had. Still liquid, didn't smell too much like lacquer thinner or too sweet, so we put in half a tank of fresh gas and hit ...

All wired up!

The best part of putting this GTX together has been my friends' willingness to let me do some hands-on learning. It probably would have taken my buddy Chris half the time to wire up my car, but because he is ...

Taking a brake...

Today, I got to reinstall the clutch cylinders, brake master cylinder and brake booster. Clutches are easier than I thought! Brake cylinder/booster though? That is pure punishment. I don't know what I did to the Universe, but boy-howdy have I ...

Stalled

A dear friend asked me to join her for a special event the weekend after the GRM Challenge. Since I had planned to spend the post-$2010 week with family, I'm having to move that up, meaning I lose a week ...

The Challenge's challenges...

So far, I'm $250 for the car + $1048 in parts&shipping for my Challenge budget. I have some tough choices to make; if I go with all new parts and sell $250 worth of goods off the car (pretty easy ...

The $2010 build has begun!

So I bought the car in November 2008 for $250, then promptly got laid off, moved cross-country from CA to NC to take another job, got laid off again, and eventually moved back to CA. Whew! Needless to say, buying ...
