Body on for no apparent reason.

I needed the fenders and hood on to fit the pedals.. Yeah it's tight like that under the fender. I decided for scientific (motivational) purposes to mount the rear fender section just to see. I forgot how short this is. ...

Rearward HO!

So of course I decided I had to move the engine 5" back.. because I have the extra time and am so far ahead on this project. Ok none of that is true except the engine moving thing. I've been ...

Not dead yet!

Rumors of this projects demise have been greatly exaggerated. I finally got tired of the terrible wheel/tire selection using rx-7 hubs. I swapped everything over to Miata uprights and the Miata diff. Today I finally got it back on all ...

The List

I've generated a list of items that need to be completed before I will be able to start Autoxing the bare chassis. It's longish but most heavy fabrication is complete so I hope it goes smoothly. It's nice to finally ...

Chassis Paint

Prepping for Paint

The time has come to paint the chassis. Finally. In effor to make that easier I built a Rotisserie. I took a few pieces of round tubing, strapped it onto the chassis and rested it on 2x4's with Vnotches on ...

I builded a steering wheel

So I decided I liked the wood wheel but not the diameter so I built one. Details on how are in a thread on the forum. http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/diy-steering-wheel-fabrication/47277/page1/ I think it turned out great.

Boom! Two doors

2nd door hinges are on. And it fits almost the same as the other side. The list is shrinking.

Doors and Stuff

Over the past few months I've finished all of the diagonals, gotten final body mounts complete, and fitted the radiator and mounted the doors. The doors are mounted using some house type door hinges cut in half and my custom ...

Rear fares fabricated

I fabricated all of the flares. I say fabricate as I still need to finish weld and contour the corners/intersections on the flares. I'm very happy with the overall look of the flares. I'm very excited to get it on ...

Metal flares

I got the main part of the front fenders tacked in in steel. I still have a lot of metal to add but this was the most complicated piece. I will post a box flare construction thread and add the ...

Flare Mockup

I mocked up the flares. I went with a DTMesque front flare with a JGTCish rear flare. I really think they look awesome!

Body Mockup

So life has been a little exciting in the past couple of months. My wife and I are expecting our first child, I've been doing a kitchen/house remodel, and I've been working 55 hour weeks. It's been intense. However progress ...

Roller DAY

A big day in the development of a car like this is always roller day. Something about being able to jump up and down on something you built and having the suspension suspend and the bellcranks crank is very rewarding. ...

Hey look comments! It does in fact have a nardi steering wheel, so it has to be a Midget. As for specs it will start life with a stock 12a, however I have a s4 turbo to put on it. The rear and uprights are from a 1986 Rx-7. Suspension is full custom. The steering system will be stock MG (rack, steering arms, column), and the body will be a midget. Thanks for the comments! You got the stock rack to work with your suspension geometry? That explains the wide track. AWESOME RIDE. Can't wait to see more.

I love those cantilevered shocks, and from where I sit, looks like a zero bump steer setup up front. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like a couple more pics. Beatiful work. I can't wait to see the FLARES!

I learned all I know about it from Allan Staniforth's Competition Car Suspension book, Carroll Smith's book series, and some from Race car Vehicle Dynamics by Milliken. Unfortunately that is ~$150-200 worth of books that librarys don't tend to have (sometimes you'll find competition car, and the Smith books). There is some information scattered about the web but nothing I've found too "comprehensive" perhapse if only we knew of some sort of web forum and perhaps magazine publisher that could create an article on them.. .. . If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

I could of swore I saw a thread on how you did your flares but I can't find it. Can you post a link? I am helping a friend with a car and we need some big flares to cover a Supra suspension.

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/metal-box-flare-construction-thread/30763/page1/ Here it is. Good luck and feel free to add your pics to the thread. I need to update it as all 4 are now mocked up and I'm going to be working again after our move to Illinois.
