Aug 6, 2010 update on ditchdigger's 1971 Fiat 850 Berlina

I started this months ago then got sidetracked and forgot about it. Found it in the backseat of the car and finished it up on thursday.

A Denso gear reduction starter from a subaru legacy had the correct rotation direction. Making the adapter was as easy as machining down the fiat starter nose to fit. The gear was a bit harder and I don’t know how long it will last.

I annealed the two gears and machined all the teeth off the subaru gear and bored out the fiat gear so I could press fit the scooby splines into it. With the TIG turned down low I ran a tiny bead of weld on both sides of the press fit and then re-hardened it with an oil quench. It will either last 10 times or a hundred…who knows?
