Two-wheeled crack Aug 4, 2010

From the Desk of: Per Schroeder

So after the successful completion of my first triathlon this past weekend, I’m seriously considering a new road bike—probably a Trek—to continue my immersion in this new-to-me sport. I’m feeling guilty about the purchase, as it’s a considerable amount of money, but can justify it any number of ways. I think the number one factor is that it’s a great way to stay in shape and be healthy. I’m also looking forward to being able to bike with Kim.

Get a good used road bike off of Craigslist. It is a lot cheaper than even a subpar new bike. $300 should do it. If you get really into it, you'll eventually need a triathlon specific bike anyway.

Actually, around here, I'm not finding any decent modern bikes under $500. That makes some of the Trek 1.2, Specialized Allez and Cannondale CAAD8 look pretty good new for $800.

Depends on your definition of modern, I guess. I picked up a Cannondale for about that. I think it is around a '98 model. For strength and durability, most people recommend to not go below the Shimano 105 component group. The bikes you mention are two or three levels below that. I know these things because I went through this same process when I started messing around with triathlons two years ago.
