Happy Work-iversary! Aug 29, 2008
From the Desk of: Tom Heath
It was one year ago today that I enjoyed the first day working here at the magazine, and I can say with a straight face that this occupation is both the most challenging and most fun I’ve had yet—and that’s compared against two enlistments in the Marine Corps and the better part of a decade as a supervisor of UAW workers in Detroit. I’m also happy to report this as the first job I’ve ever had where I wasn’t flat-out THE craziest guy in the joint—my flavor of crazy is pretty mild when compared with some of my esteemed peers.
It’s been a year of firsts for me, as I’ve been able to check a ton of things off my bucket list. The biggie was seeing my name and work in print, but other highlights include lapping Road Atlanta, attending the Ultimate Track Car Challenge, meeting Bob Bondurant, seeing the 24 Hours of Daytona, competing in several Rallycross events, attending the Evolution school, and very soon I’ll be competing in my first Solo National Championship event. That’s a pretty berkeleying good year.
They can’t all be good days, even working at a place as cool as this. The pace is fast and the learning curve is steep, so we’re all bound to catch an old-fashioned ass-chewing at some point. Thanks to my military experience, my ass has become a leathery, tooth-resistant hide that can stand up to the harshest abuse. There’s rarely any blood.
Without getting emotional, I’ll close with a very sincere “thank you” to the entirety of the Motorsport Marketing staff for the generous opportunity they’ve given me. I look forward to many more work-iversaries.

- They couldn't have hired a nicer guy, Tom. My only regret is that I'm not around to bum ride-alongs in your Miata now that its turbocharged.
