Removing outboard CV joints from axle halfshaft

Suggested by Tyler H

The axle halfshaft on most newer cars is attached to the outer CV joint by a circlip that is concealed once the CV joint is snapped onto the axle. Over time, it becomes almost impossible to separate the two and the outer joint is considered a “non-serviceable part” most factory service manuals.

I wanted to make a custom axles for my Toyota MR2 Mk1.5 project, so I bought some new ebay axles from an ‘88 Camry V6, but I needed to get the joints onto a 91 MR2 halfshaft.

To separate the outer joint, I figured out that you could slide the whole axle into a pipe, such that the ballrace from the outer joint was resting snugly against the pipe. One good overhead thwack, and the two are cleanly separated.
