99/04 Cobra IRS left rear outer boot failures
Suggested by JimmysidecarrHere is a tip that is easy, works and is low buck. If any of you have tried to purchase new outer axle(CV) boots for your 1999 through 2004 SVT Cobra Mustangs , you may have been told “no not available separately”. I’m afraid it’s true , at least they are N/A through Ford.
It seems that road racing or HPDE/Open Track activities are capable of heating the left rear outer CV to the point where it inflates and contacts something back there(can’t remember right now, caliper bracket?), resulting in an exploded CV boot and all the contained SMURF POO CV grease being expelled all over the exhaust and right rear brake! Hello BLACK FLAG and end of weekend fun!
Here is the fix. Carry a spare axle? NO! Drive slower? NO! Switch to a live (solid) axle? NO!
Take the extension nozzle from a can of WD-40 or brake clean and use it to vent the small diameter end of your CV boot. Cut off the inner CV boot clamp, insert the thin nozzle, and re-clamp with a universal CV boot from any parts store, or in a pinch a heater hose clamp will work.
The boot can now vent excess pressure as it heats up, allowing it to retain it’s fluted shape and not grow out and contact any sharp edged parts.
I put this in the performance section only because it only happens on track and not on the street. AND… I didn’t know where else to put it. There is no chassis or suspension section, that I could find.
There is no true performance benefit as far as faster lap times, unless you factor in the BLACK FLAG DOWN TIME! Which you must admit is significantly slower than BEING ON TRACK!
