Samurai rear diff breather installation

Suggested by GameboyRMH

What you need:

  1. Lots of 0.5” ID flexible tubing (braided clear PVC is best, get at least 10ft. to be safe)

  2. 0.5” hose clamp

  3. Small pliers

  4. Sharp knife

  5. Screwdrivers

  6. Work gloves

  7. Remove the panel in the bed of the Sammy over the fuel filler area. Two screws hold it in.

  8. Cut an X-shaped hole in the seal. Be careful not to cut any tubes! This hole should be just big enough to pass the new hose through.

  9. Get under the rear axle and remove the breather cap. The easiest way is to pry it up from below with some pliers. Take your time and don’t squeeze the cap itself or you’ll need to cut it off, and try not to scratch the metal tube it’s on. Also wear work gloves so you don’t beat the crap out of your hands when the pliers slip like I did. Once the cap is off, remove the spring and rubber disc inside. Make sure you get these things out! Fish around with a paperclip if you have trouble.

  10. Run the hose from the bed through the hole you made, under the fuel filler hose shield, across the right side of the fuel tank and above the rear axle. Leaving a downward loop at the open end in the bed will reduce the chance of water getting in if the hose goes under water. Leave enough slack for the suspension to extend fully without causing any tension but not so much that it will bunch up under full compression. Try not to leave any dips in the tubing where diff oil fumes could condense and pool, this could effectively block the hose.

  11. Clean the tube coming out of the diff, plug in the hose and clamp it on tight. Cut the excess tubing and reinstall the panel in the sammy’s bed.

  12. Wade depth++!

The procedure is similar to install an extended front diff breather.

914Driver:
Put an ear plug in the hole to allow air to pass but slow down water and mud.
