flooding carbs

Suggested by Roto_B

In the Dec 08 GRM when discussing start up problems on new engines & they discussed flooding carbs.Remember that the float system works like a toilet.Yes a whack to the carb may do but I have found that shuting off the fuel supply by pinching off a possilbe rubber feed hose or electric supply to the fuel pump.when the car runs out of fuel the carb float bowl will be empty & the needle will be fully open. When the fuel supply is returned, the incoming fuel will wash the needle area clean & stop the fooding situation.

Usually when a float sticks its because of an underlying problem like a bad needle seat, punctuared float, or sediment in the bowl. Usually the time spent to clean and rebuild the carb right the first time is time well spent.

Also some aftermarket pumps may have too much pressure for some carbs like Webers. A fuel pressure regulator will cure this. For example, a Weber should only have 3.5 lbs of pressure at the needle.
