Shortening bolts

Suggested by lukemckee

Ever wanted to shorten a bolt, but thought that the angle grinder would ruin the threads? Just put a nut on the bolt first - then when you get the bolt down to the desired length, you can just turn off the nut to straighten out the threads at the end. NOTE - this should not be done for strength critical bolts, as the heat from cutting might alter/remove the temper of the material.

the best method ( unless you have a thread cutting lathe ) is place a die on to the bolt, use a hack saw to cut off to length, allow just a little extra, move the die all the way to the bolt head, after you cut with the hacksaw, using lots of water dress it off to finish with a grinder, then use the die to partially fonish off the end, then dress with a whet stone, this is time consuming, but works without untempering the bolt, I have 3 years of machine shop theory and practice, and 36 years in the automotive field, and this system worked for me every time, but if you dont know the proper wat to hack saw and file, and use a tap it can be very expensive to replace the tools you have screwed up
