Well, the Boxster was developed solely by Porsche, came out 20 years later, sold more units, and took the first steps towards saving the company. The 914 is definitely similar (mid-engined, lower market Porsche), but it had little, if any, influence on the Boxster.

Something else that's not a sexy detail but is crucial to the success of the Boxster and its revitalization of Porsche was their move to "Just in time" manufacturing as they came out with the Boxster.
This allowed Porsche to heavily cut down on costs so the Boxster was that much more profitable, which helped turn the company around.

Yup, a little trick they learned from Toyota if I remember correctly. It's incredible to hear some of the stories of how the Porsche factories use to be run, but I'm sure glad they were willing to change. Ever since the 997.1 GT3, Porsche has been absolutely killing it.
