Well this is the start. Drug it off for 200 little over a month ago. Knowing I was going to get it and it did not have a title, I found a VW thing on Craigslist. The guy let me take it for free with a good title if I could get it. It is probably the worlds worst Thing in the world. BUT it is a THING. I pulled the 1600 motor off the Thing, it and it only needs rings and bearings. The buggy motor is 1200 and has a rust locked cylinder. I did not get a bill of sale for either, I did not know this was a thing until yesterday when me and son in law saw a Chrysler crossfire on a trailer with stickers. Now the last 2 months have made sense.
I found a guy with a complete rebuild set for trade for as box blade, there is other stuff as well. Talked him down to 300 cash. I got the box blade as scrap. Go with the 300 or the scrap price I paid on the blade?
I have a set of rims that I got a a perk to work at a company like 12+ years ago, been sitting in the dirt since, how do these get valued?
To be clear. This is legal. Main structure is that tunnel. Right? Just need a proper cage?
I had a 2k budget to begin with. Well I have nothing to be real real, but that is what I would like to allocate between now and next year Daytona time. SO, now I want to not look stupid and actually perform.

For air cooled VWs, I believe you need the entire belly pan for it to be legal, someone else please correct me if I'm wrong.
If you paid for something, you need to document what you paid. The box blade isnt part of the car so doesn't affect anything. You might be able to argue that the parts and the box blade were a parts lot and you paid $300 for that. Then you take a percentage of the price for that lot. That will be up for debate.
For the wheels that sounds like an inside deal so you need to figure out Fair Market Value (FMV)
At least, the way I see it for everything.
I don't think you will have a single problem from anyone regarding budget with those two as your starting points. Do not worry about a cage until after the car runs and drives more then 30 feet. The cage is where most get caught up and most don't need it.
Did you trade the box blade, or pay 300, or both?
If you traded the box blade for the rebuild kit, and 300 for other parts you aren't using, just the box blade. If it's different, apply that logic as necessary.
You can screenshot texts as receipt for budget purposes instead of bill of sale.

As it turned out I left him the box blade and took a pile of parts and 150 cash. He advertised Them at 400. I talked him down to 300 cash, then offer blade as trade and left his house with cash and parts.
Thank-you
I think as convoluted as I have to work to get things done I will have to keep a much better track of everything. Good thing I am just starting.

I understand what you are saying about the cage, BUT as it sits now. My short 5'8" head is above that top rail. It may not NEED a full cage, It is a TOP priority to give me and son in law some type of life protection. I am such a squirrel I would be lucky to just get stuck on the cage.
I'm curious to see where this one goes.
I am as well sir. I was able to a free 454 motor home of the 1990 vintage. It is a nasty nasty thing. It does run and drive strong. Everyone keeps asking what I am going to do with it, I am telling them 15's, but I really want 12's ROFLAO. ANYWAY. It is a big bonus to the race car build. It will let me have more parts storage and a place to do work on more delicate stuff and stuff.
Looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish with the Thing. Don't stress the rules about "frame rails" or whatever too much. If you build a tube-frame car that doesn't look like a car, then you need some kind of original frame or structure. If you build a car that looks like a real car, such as using the Thing body, then go crazy on the chassis.

Nasty Thing would be a great name for this build
Nasty Thing is a great name.
Hope to see it there.
