I grew up pushing a reel mower around, and when I bought a mower for my house in the US I picked up a u-push reel mower for it. They're great up to a certain point - if you skip a week, you're screwed.
That's the key to reel mowing right there.
When I was 18 and living in Australia, I used to mow lawns for some pocket money. I had a Victa Commando mower. It was truly Australian - if it works well, so double the power. It is not a country of subtlety. The thing could take out small trees. Skip a week? Pshaw. Skip a season if you'd like. I miss that thing.
A powered, self-propelled reel mower is what a couple friends and I built into a gocart when we were about 13. Neighbors never complained about us driving on their lawns.

I remember these as electric.

I've got an electric flymo. It's really not that great unless you want really short lawn.
I wondered is there was a way to adjust the height. I figured change the pitch of the blade or rev it higher? I saw them being used to mow steep slopes, but how are they for doing, say, a 1/4 acre lawn? I think it would look need having it trim, but no lines in it.

Could always get out the leaf blower and get it all going the same direction like some of my neighbors used to do.

There's no way to adjust the height on mine. Mine may run low because I got it without an impeller. The only place I could find one was in England, so I'm not sure if it flies low because it was meant to run on 220v?
