I saw the strut replacement a few pages back. What strut inerts are those? Looks like an inverted insert with a threaded stem at the bottom?

They're Bilstein Group4 gravel rally inserts for Mk1/2 Escorts. Pretty cheap from the UK. Link: https://www.demon-tweeks.com/us/bilstein-group-4-escort-mk1-mk2-front-gravel-long-insert-300-70-blsf4-xde-g778-t3/

I think the site is called motorsport-tools.com or something like that. It's also in the UK. There are a few different places that sell the housings. I basically bought the whole kit that had the collars and perches and all that. If you can't find it let me know and I will see if I can find it directly

In reply to irish44j (Forum Supporter) :

You can now buy complete, brand new Escorts from motorsport-tools.com, in street trim or rally trim.

For legal reasons they call it the MST, though. There is a space for a Ford badge on the grille if you'd like.

yeah, I noticed that too. Too bad I don't have $22k + transatlantic shipping + entire Mk1/2 drivetrain and suspension sitting around.

Guess I'll just have to stick with an e30 with the Escort suspension bits :)

So just a quick update. Car is completely back together now (aside from rewiring one of my aux lights, which I'll get around to at some point), so took it for a drive today (sadly, on tarmac not gravel). Takeaways:

1. Everything feels good.

2. No noise from the rear spherical mounts (incidentally, currently have Bilstein HDs back there until  the new Gp4 stuff arrives).

3. Less clunkly from the rear than before - I suspect those old CV joints had a lot of play in them. The spare ones (with new boots) I used feel tighter.

4. Removing the uprated Bellville washers and putting the stock ones back into the diff did the trick. Still have good lockup with the 3 clutches, but no more crunch-crunch-crunch around every corner, just silence, which is nice. I also put 140-weight Redline in this time, which seems to have quieted things down a bit as well.

All in all, car is ready to be back in action.

Incidentally, my three project cars are a combined 101 years old.

also, someone recently asked me if anything on this car is original to an '85 318i and the answer is: other than the body itself (including the subframes), pretty much nothing at all on this car is a 318i part!

Engine: Originally M10 --> M42 --> M50. Obviously all accessories are M50 stuff as well.

Steering: Has a Z3 rack in it now

Cooling: Has a e36 M3 3-row aluminum radiator and M20 e30 expansion tank now.

Transmission: The 318i had a G240, and this car has a G240 currently, but it's not the same box - this is the one from the '91 M42 car, which has pretty much the same gear set, but that's about it. Shifter is Z3.

Driveshaft: a combination of 318ti and regular e36 shafts to get the right length for the M50/G240 setup

Suspension: The only suspension parts this has that came on a 318i are the front control arms. Rear trailing arms are 325 (with disc brakes, the 318 came with drums). Other suspension stuff is obviously upgraded

Hubs/spindles: Both 325i stuff, since they're attached to the uprights (front) and RTAs (rear) and the 318 had smaller-diameter uprights.

Brakes: 318i had drums in the rear (this has 325i discs) and may or may not have had solid discs up front (vented now)

Exhaust: no part of the 318 exhaust is present

Diff: 318 had a small case 3.91 LSD that I used for a number of years. Now it has medium-case 3-disc 3.73 and 4.10.

LIghting: Headlights are later "smilies" (well, ebay knockoffs). The taillights and secondary lights are original.

Interior: well, it has half of the original 318i dash, but aside from that I can't think of any other original interior parts other than door handles, window switches, and wiper/headlight/signal switches.

Ok....yes, the washer fluid reservoir and pump are original :)

Day I got it (compare to the photo in the post before this)

Nothing much new. Registered for the rallysprint at Rausch Creek on the 30th, which should be fun.

In other news, a number of the local DC crew did well at Rallycross nationals last weekend, including Andy Thomas finally winning MF class after just missing a few times (Celica) and Shawn repeating as PR class champion (Miata). From the DC MR class, Mike Golden pulled off 3rd (had been in 2nd, but rolled his MR2 on the last run on a debead, and managed to hold onto 3rd in someone else's Miata), and Nick managed 5th in the M3. John England won it all, beating multi-time champion Brianne Corn. Hey, I actually beat England a couple times a few years back at the East Coast championship. Supposedly me beating him convinced him to finally supercharge his Miata (so I heard, but probably not true) , and now he is THE fastest.  Anyhow, good job to those guys and our MA friends (Dan Shirley, Mike Julian, and Billy Petrow) who battled hard in that huge class and pulled of respectable finishes.

As to my car.....well, the replacement rear shocks finally made their way here from Ireland. So, went ahead and installed them. Note the size difference from the HDs:

Minor note: you may recall that on the original set, I had found that the lower eye bolt opening on the Gp4 ones is about 1/2 mm larger than the e30 HDs (made for SAE size on the old Escorts?). Last time I pressed some HD bushings and eyes into the Gp4 shocks with much hassle. This time I used some aluminum tape wrapped around the bolt to build up 1/2 mm. I doubt it'll hold up, but who knows. Not like it can go anywhere.

Mike had a red flag incident, not sure where you heard he had a roll.

wink

What amused me is how many people offered to give him a co drive after his mister two turned into mister done.  I guess everyone wanted to see Brianne unseated, since Mike was leading going into Sunday.  In the end the win went to a different previous MR winner.

lol....I mean, I'm actual friends with Mike, so I saw the video soon after it actually happened ;) As far as that whole "SCCA rallycross don't talk about rollovers...." yeah....whatever.  I mean, it woudln't be a RX Nationals if SOMEONE didn't roll it......just didn't expect it would be a freaking MR2 lol.

Mike locally is VERY fast for 90% of every event. In some cases, the fastest in MR for 90% of any given event. But he has a bad habit of having one (or sometimes two) disastrous runs at every event (a plus-6, or off-course, or something breaks). Hence why he has only ever won ONE event in DC MR class....ever.

I've driven that MR. It's a bit janky, but has surprisingly good balance even trail braking (for an MR2). Yet another one of our local MR cars that are, at this point, faster than mine and it's an uphill battle to beat.

The Sequoia is pretty big, but tires take up a lot of space inside. Here and there I've just strapped tires onto the trailer but they always seem to move around throughout a long trip. Time to install a post today just to make them more easily secured. Had some old DOM tubing so cut a 30-ish inch piece, and found a piece of plate from something or other to make a base (conveniently already drilled, though had to cut off a 90* bend with the plasma cutter. Anyhow, welded them together (and welded on a cap so it wouldn't collect water) and painted...

And bolted to the trailer deck with a couple big backing plates

Slid some 1 1/2" PVC over it to get it closer to my wheel centerbore (and keep it from clanking

Also drilled a hole in the top for a lock, whicih is more security than just having the usual ratchet strap

---

In other news, just made a deal today to pick up a new recce vehicle (another e30). Now, if you've been following this thread, you may be reminding me of two things:

1. "You used to have a rust-free 318is shell in your shed, and you sold it last winter to Eric and Neil to build a rallycross car. Why didn't you use that??" Well...at the time I had other projects and wanted my shed back. While that was a nice rust-free shell, it didn't have any drivetrain and really nothing at all underneath other than some rusty old suspension (no brakes or anything, that I recall). And the guys needed a shell because their e30 was breaking in half (literally), so I sold it to them. But yeah.... Somewhat regretting that now.

2. "You built that Raider and even put "RECCE1" plates on it, I thought you were going to use that for recce??" Well, that was certainly one of the plans for it, but I also built it to go wheeling with (which I have a number of times). The Raider is a blast to drive and I really enjoy it. However, it is really not a great highway vehicle and REALLY not great for longer hauls. I can deal with 3 hours to the ORV or the woods, but most rallies are a lot farther, and the short wheelbase movements, wind noise, noisy tires, lousy fuel mileage, etc. all make tiresome to drive for extended periods. And it really doesn't like going above about 65mph comfortably. No good for a 10-hour haul to NEFR, for instance. Not to mention since I am always towing the race car, It means I have to ask someone else on my crew (or jim) to drive any recce vehicle. I'd rather have something for them that doesn't totally suck the drive on the highway for a long distance.

Also, as we've found using the Sequoia/4Runner/Tacoma for recce in recent years, they're not very good for it. Yeah, they drive the courses fine, but the viewpoint up high looks a lot different from where you're sitting low in the rally car. A more similar point of view will be more useful, I think. There's a reason the SRT drivers all recce in a WRX that's essentially identical to their competition cars. Plus we always seem to do recce loaded up with all of our gear lol.  (minus the cage and safety stuff, of course).  In addition, having a second e30 with us at events guarantees we'll have any spare parts we could possibly need for the rally car itself :)

So, I'm picking up Dan Gugger's old 1984 318i occasional rallycross car, which is basically a bone-stock base 318i (much like my own rally car started a decade ago). It's a wimpy M10, but a manual. It has a full interior, inclusing M-tech stuff and e30 Sport seats, hand-crank windows and sunroof, and it's a coupe. It has a bit of rust, but hopefully nothing too bad. And it has most of the A/C stuff still there, which is important.

Anyhow, gonna pick that up in a few weeks and make a plan. Luckily I have a TON of suspension stuff (so I can convert it from the 318 drum brakes and solid rotors and tiny shocks to later 325 stuff). And Jim has some M20B25s in his storage shed, so maybe we'll swap one of those in (or an M50) down the road. As it is, it runs and drives but has issues. It's cheap enough it's worth getting, and I need a winter project since the rally car, porsche, and raider are all essentially done And the suburbs are berkeleying boring when I have nothing to do. If I end up not needing it later, it's easy enough to sell e30s these days. At very least it's something to do.

And no, I don't have any intent to use it for rallycross or other motorsports. I plan for it to have a comfortable interior, A/C, and other stuff that isn't condusive to racing. I had thought for a bit to use the old red shell to build an ultra-lightweight rallycross car with lots of power - that would probably be a lot faster than the rally car - but honestly I don't consider that worthwhile. I have a rally car, I'll use it for rallycross even if it's less competitive at this point. Having two competition cars for basically the same thing would be dumb.

Anyhow, more on that once I have it here (and I figure out where to put it and work on it, since I have too many cars and not enough garage space).

Rausch Creek Halloween Mudfest

Yesterday we headed up to Rausch Creek offroad park for another rallysprint at the same place as the last one. Only difference was, this time it was wet. The forecase looked pretty decent, but that proved errant as it poured all night and all morning, and we arrived there in a steady rain and everyone milled about as the heavy equipment guys cleaned up some "problem" areas.

The car was sitting on some old, very worn Federal hard compound gravels (Jon Kramer did 2/3rds of a SOFR on them, we did a full STPR on them, and I used them all season for rallycross). I threw my knobby Maxsports on the trailer as well with the intention of swapping them on, but once we got there I didn't want to do it in the rain - and we saw that the Nonacks were running some old gravels as well. Not sure what the tires on all the FWD cars in the class looked like, but at events like this we really want to compete against the RWD cars, and putting the Maxsports on seemed like it would be a massive advantage, which wouldn't be as much fun against Chris and Sara on old gravels. So we stuck with them.

Did I mention it was muddy?

Which of course meant it meant the inside of the car got muddy too

The course started off very slick, but as the rain stopped it tacked up pretty decent in most areas, other than a cut-through area weaving slowly through a bunch of trees, which was complete muck and we had a TON of trouble getting through. On one pass I exited that area directly onto a berm (thinking I could just drive up and over) and had to back off of it and spend 20 seconds getting going again. On another I slid it into another berm, tried to back up and ended up in an even muddier depression and could NOT get the car to move. Glanced in my rearview and I see Ozgur and 2-3 other guys running through the woods and after what seemed like foreever they got there and gave us a push to get going again. Other than those incidents, thought I drove pretty well and Jim was spot-on with the notes - though he was more trying to get me on the correct lines that had traction as much as calling actual turns.

Also had to refill my windshield washer TWICE. This car has a bad habit of spraying things all over the windshield. Combined with mediocre 1980s wipers and sprayers, it made for some nearly-blind driving at a few moments. I'm going to think about some ways to mitigate that in the future (spats for front wheels, or something, idk).

After the day and afternoon sessions, we went up to the ORV to grab some lunch and watched some King of Hammers-type rigs doing some practicing on a couple big rock formations. Pretty intense stuff.

With the evening session to go, I looked at the times and we were sitting in 2nd in 2WD class, 13 seconds behind Becca GT in her Fiesta (not bad after having gotten stuck twice). Chris decided to change out his rear tires for fresh(er) Hoosiers and some others were changing as well....and the smart move would have been to change my tires (or at least the rears) to the Maxsports - especially as the course would prove to start getting much more slippery as daylight faded.

But instead, we just stood around and watched Sara put costumes on her dogs...

Also didn't put on the long-range Diode Dynamics lightbar since we were going so slow, but the low-mounted bars really didn't help out too much and a few sections were mostly "drive by memory" rather than actually being able to see the turns. I would describe the night session as "spooky" without the big lights, and with a few nearby deer spottings while on stage.

Random pic

In the end, we finished 2 seconds behind Becca, gaining 11 back in the last 5 mini-stages. Quite certain a tire change would have let us pass her by a wide margin, but......laziness and not wanting to deal with it in the mud, with no crew. We're prissy (and/or lazy) like that.

Then everyone had to get on wet, muddy trailers. We got up with a few people pushing. Other cars had more issues, and Chris slid his back tire off the side and it was a substantial team effort to get it back on, at night, in the mud.

Overall, the car felt good and had no issues of note other than some clattery sound from the radiator fan. Figured there was some dried mud or a stick or something in there making noise, as the fan seemed to be blowing fine. After cleaning it up at home there still seems to be a bit of noise so I'll have to take it out and see what the deal is and/or replace it. One rallycross left for the season so probably will worry about it after that.

Today, the payoff for a mud rallysprint: cleanup.

Put the car on stands, pulled the wheels, and spent 4 hours between cleaning the car and then cleaning the mess it left on my driveway and trailer.

This one AFTER using my hand to get most of the mud off...

That looks better.

Incidentally, the side "skirts" coming up from the skid plate really kept most of the mud out of the engine bay. The bay looks surprisingly un-muddy.

All in all, took 67lbs of mud off the car.....but not as bad as Summit Point red clay, so at least there's that. Still, wanted to get most of this off with the hope the last rallycross won't be muddy, and I won't have to do any extreme cleaning before I stash the car for the winter.

Jim, here's a muddy pic of your Taco

Is there an easy-ish way to rewire the wiper motor so low is high and high is low, so when you hit the washer it swipes fast?

I think I see how to do it on the RX-7s, and the VWs too for that matter, but the shipment of round tuits have not arrived yet.

The easy way would be to do it the way big-time rally teams do: give the codriver the controls lol.

I'm sure there's a way, but I'm also sure that my electrical wiring skills are mediocre enough that trying to mess with it would probably end up with the wipers or washer not working at all. lol.

So I picked up another e30, amazingly a year OLDER than the rally car, for a possibly semi-related purpose (though not going to be a rally car). After three months of it sitting on a ship off the west coast, finally got my Ironman 8-foot awning for the tow pig. It's pretty much the same as the ARB ones in every way, but it's about $100 cheaper so that's a plus. But thanks to delays, I'm just getting it now. In any case, the quality looks comparable to ARB and it even came with a ratcheting 10mm wrench for the bolts, which I don't really need (I used electric) but it a nice little thing , better than the janky wrenches that usually come with stuff like this

In any case, install was pretty easy since I had already drilled the holes when I built the rack, but it's nice to finally have it on. Will come in handy once it warms up again and we want shade at race days, etc.

2021 rallycross season - that's a wrap

We wrapped up the 2021 DC RallyCross season last weekend. This has been a pretty inconsistent season for me compared to the ten prior ones, and this has also been the first season where car issues have cost me some events. I missed one weekend (two events) fixing the damage from STPR, and another one I ran in MA class just for fun (don't recall what was wrong with the car at the time). In any case, car was set to go this weekend, and Josh S. (bluej) came out to co-drive with me as he hasn't yet finished his e30 duratec swap.

the top half of the MR class...

With a big 18-car MR field running on the "big" course at Panthera with temps in the 30s, Josh brought his own tires (some old Maxsports), though two of them were extremely worn on the edges with really only tread on about half the tire, which we put in the back so we'd have some shoulder bite for turning. Whatever, neither of us were in the points race anyhow, so who cares.

Garrett Lofland photo

two black e30s, two black vans

First three runs we both went out fast with good times, and both picked up a single cone on each of our first thrree runs (grr). I think the lack of tread on the rear tires was making the back end a bit too slidey and I'm pretty sure all my cones were with the rear end of the car on a cone-heavy course with more slaloms than we usually have at this venue. At the lunch break I think I was sitting in like 12th place, and Josh S. maybe more toward 6th as he was really driving fast. In the afternoon a few of the cars ahead of us made some mistakes trying to catch Stephen and Nick up front (what's new), and we a couple runs left I was up to 5th and Josh had moved into 2nd, ahead of Nick (who was cone-free) and one second behind Stephen. That's how fast Josh S. was driving! Unfortunately for him, he slid the car out too much through a slalom section and lost the grip and hit 6 cones and dropped way down after almost winning. I hit one more cone in the afternoon and managed to move up to 5th for the day, though my last run was the fastest in the run group, so it was nice to end on a high note. The car performed well (aside from the crappy rear tires) so no complaints there.

Garrett Lofland photo

Also towed a 240sx back to the paddock when he couldn't get started (his build is on here too).

Brian Folsom brough his scales for a fundraiser to get new parts for the rallycross gear van, and though I didn't get weighed (my car is 2850lbs or so, based on corner weighing this summer), it was interesting to see some of my competitors in MR - the other e30 guys were mostly in the 2600lb range, the MR2s in the 2000lb range, and Jim's Miata was 2300lb or so. So other than maybe Nick's M3, mine is probably the heaviest car in the class by a good margin.

Overall I finished 5th in the points but was never within striking distance of the top guys (Nick 1st, Stephen 2nd, and Neil and Eric actually tied in points for 3rd driving the same car - my old shell). I did manage one win this season but overall drove pretty inconsistently and hit more cones than I usually do, and only had one other podium finish that I recall (and that was driving Eric's e30). Granted, I ran almost the entire season on old gravels so not sure if that hurt (maybe, maybe not).  We'll see if I can get back to form next year. I'm guessing more events at Panthera (where I tend to drive better) and less at Summit Point (where I drive worse), but TBD.

Garrett Lofland photo

With Jim and Amanda's matching Miata

Spent today cleaning up the car, taking out the fire system and extinguishers, and taking the trunk spoiler off so my car cover fits, since this thing will be living in the driveway this winter while I work on the new e30 project in the garage (just too crowded in there with two cars, so literally the only car that will be in the garage winter of my 6 is the oldest, E36 M3tiest one. Go figure.

No real plans for upgrades at the mment. I'd like to get an e36 transmission (particularly the ZF) since these G240s aren't sounding great any more (the bearings sounds like boxes of rocks, as G240 bearings always do) and it's not really worth the trouble to try to rebuild these things, honestly. So if a ZF pops up I may grab that and swap it in. Otherwise, car seems to generally be pretty decent and I have the other e30 to work on for the winter anyhow.

Will post up about next year's rally stuff once I know exactly what the plan is. Definitely doing New England Forest Rally since I have a free entry, but the rest of the schedule is up in the air at the moment.

This is mostly a copy of the post from my other e30 build since it covers both cars:

The other day I saw a good cheap engine candidate for the "recce" e30 and went to check it out today. I figured it was just a scrapper or part-er, but as it turns out it was the production HQ for Sikky, a known company that makes a bunch of custom parts primarily for LS swaps and drift cars, but also other stuff. The guy gave me a tour of the facility and noted that they build 100% of their products right there (in Baltimore), and there were several guys busy machining things on huge CNC mills. Also racks full of brand-new custom subframes, mounts, arms, and various other neat parts I can't afford.

They also had a bunch of cool cars there (like, 50 of them total I'd say, some on lifts, some on racks, some on the ultra-clean work floor). There were two FC RX-7s (one had an LS6 swap), a few different Skylines, a 323GTX, a few BMWs, and some other stuff.

Each of the cars getting swaps had a palleted box of stuff next to them (several of which were brand-new LS's and transmissions). It's an extremely organized, clean, and professional shop from what I can see - doing both production of parts and also building some pretty cool cars.

Anyhow, the reason I was there is that with all these swaps, they pull the original engines and generally just sell them for cheap. They had a few dozen engines on shelves and pallets. The BMW engines I saw a couple M60 (?) V8s, an M50 with some stuff missing, an M40, and a couple M42s - one from an e36 and one from an e30. So for THIS project car I picked up the drop-out M42 from an e30 vert sitting nearby halfway through an LS swap, including all accessories and the G240 transmission.

However, I also pulled the Getrag 250 from the e36 engine there, which I'll use in the rally car. It has better ratios than the G240s I've been using for years and also has syncros that are about twice as big. From what I've read it's pretty much a direct swap since they also used them for M50s (IIRC), and the only thing I'll need is an e36 slave cylinder. So, that will be a project for the spring once it warms up.

Loaded up in the rig:

The G250 in all its glory (I also got the driveshaft that was with it, though I think I can just use the DS I have now)

In other funny coincidence, the guy there showed me a caged e30 they used to make their LS swap parts and are now selling. It has a decent cage in it but otherwise is pretty gutted.  Said it's for sale for $1k (no drivetrain). The funny part is that car belonged to Nathan Chen, who I know from back in the day (he's a semi-pro drift guy now) and before that Yoshi Jeffrey, who's basically the first e30 guy I met when I got the rally car. He used to use it for drift so that's what the cage is for, and I think he had this car a decade ago when I met him (it looked really nice at the time). I remember the "free hugs" stickers on the rear window lol. Small world.

It's a full roller. Some driver's floor rust but didn't look too bad. Front fenders were cut to give more drift angle and crap....

I can give you his contact if you want lol

Kind of on pins and needles waiting to hear what happened with RXB's vote on the proposed rules.  We had three emergency meetings in the last month, right up to the night before the vote, as well as some private calls here and there.  In a nutshell, the RXB is against ANY modifications to the shell aft of the firewall, and we had been trying to find a compromise solution that would allow for allowable modifications while still preventing people from just, say, hulling out the inside of the car and saying it's good.  Our original proposal would have defined an area that could not be touched (the immediate cabin where the driver/passenger sit, essentially) which would have kept a certain 924 legal as well as a whoooooole lot of other cars.  The counter-proposal was NO modifications, which would have made many cars illegal, including my MR car.  We came up with a compromise proposal that unfortunately would make some cars illegal.  It's been a hair pulling mess.

I mean, I HAVE the PR car, and since the RXB is firm that engine relocation is not allowed in Mod, I might get a legal cage in my GTI and make that the new crazy car in Constructor's.  Buuuut I've wanted an E30 for as long as I have driven them, and a drivetrainless car means I'd be free to swap in a Duratec engine...

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about lol....then again, nobody here in DC cares much about the national rules anyhow. I don't think anyone in this region has ever protested another competitor, even when we KNEW stuff was illegal (say, a PR car with a quicker steering rack). "Emergency Meetings" of a rallycross board sounds like some autocross E36 M3, lol.....Here in DC, everyone would probably ignore them anyhow.

so what cars will be "made illegal?" and also, why does Mod have any rules at all? The rule in Mod should be "do whatever the hell you want as long as the car is safe." IDK. Not that I care.

Incidentally, if they're trying to level the field, the real solution is limitations on tires. Right now it's all about who has $10k to spend on all the crazy Euro grasstrack tires and crap, which mean way more than taking 20lbs off a car or whatever.. . Make everyone run on gravel rally tires, and mod their cars however they want.

Also, Constructor's still exists? Who knew.....I've yet to actually see a car in that class at any east coast events.
