Shifter lands in almost the exact same location as the one in the miata!

Hows the oil pan looking?

Okay, I know I am a bit of a luddite.  I couldn't figure out how to multiple piktors in a single post.

I also realize they are out of order.

Hope you enjoy the journey so far.

It will be a bit before I make much more progress.  I need to get the exhaust back on the racecar, finish the duel system, move the clutch master down .25" and generally get it ready for the next race.

I also don't have money right now.  #racecar...

It looks fine.  About 1 inch below the crewmember, but it will be up about .5 inches from this point.  Sorry for the crappy pic.

I did notch the crewmember in the front.  After I got everything where I wanted to, I realize I didn't need to cut it this much!

Man, the fact you don't have to cut the oil pan is amazing and so much mire better than my swap!!!!

Thats AWESOME.

Not nearly as easy as the 2nd gen rx7....  this thing had the rotary engine shrink wrapped in there.

A 90 degree v6 or an ohc engine would be sooo much more of a nightmare.

The rx7 swallows that E36 M3 up like it was it's job.  Sooo much room for activities!

Wiring harness showed up!  I didn't trust the recycler to know exactly what year it was, so I was waiting to send pics to sinister performance to make sure I get the correct pcm to match with it.  Pics say it is a 2007 wire harness that matches the E38 PCM.

The PCM tuning is 120 plus some shipping.  If the PCM that obsolete has isnt going to work, its $100.00 for sinister to source one.  So for like $400 total, I have a fully programmable PCM and wiring harness to run the 3900 engine in the rx8.  Deal!

Uh-oh. I have an E67. If your harness doesn't have that third blue plug, this ain't the PCM you're looking for. '06-'07 must have been when the E67-E38 changeover happened. Good thing I didn't ship it yet.

Uh oh...  maybe I should look at the harness again.  I didn't know to look for a 3rd plug!

I'll check tonight!

I got a few goodies that I needed to make the car go vroom.  (Although I still don't have the actual engine or trans I'm gonna use....)

First up the control device (PCM, ecu,  whatever ya wanna call it)

And then, thanks to obsolete, I also have a throttle pedal that should work for the conversion!

Sooo, lemme tell you about sinister performance...

Their customer service is awesome.  I contacted them about what I wanted to do and asked which ecu I needed to get.  They gave me the info I needed that it basically had to be a 2006 or 2007 Pontiac g6 with the 3900 and manual trans.

I sourced the harness.

Sinister actually sourced the ecu, modded it to work in my application and sent it to me for very little monies.

I have worked with them in the past on my champcar (when it was powered by a 3400 LA1 engine).  It was tuned very well and worked on the first push of the starter button.  We podiumed a few times and won a 24 hour race by 19 laps with that ecu.

My point is, if you are trying to do a swap or just get your gm ecu tuned, sinister is pretty awesome and inexpensive!

Great! I'm glad it showed up intact and I hope it helps your car make vroom noises. I wish the ECM had worked for you but it sounds like you got a great setup from sinister.

Yeah, now I just need an engine!

Lolz.

P.s. I checked my PayPal and it didn't seem like the monies got to you yet.

I'll check again in the morning to see what's up.

Thanks again!

Sooo...  I haz an engine!

I was able to turn the upper intake manifold around for use in RWD configuration relatively easily.  I had to remove the power steering pump (not needed) and cut the mounting bracket off the timing cover, water pump cover, etc...

I also had to clearance some on the intake manifold (areas that were brackets or bosses that were not needed).

THis engine also has teh radiator hoses in a convenient spot!  THis is going to be easier to swap than teh 3400 or 3500 that i have put in my 2nd gen rx7 racecar!

The only downside is that it is difficult to get to the oil fill.  I will need to use a long funnel to get it under the intake manifold.

Swap the valve covera side to side?

and can you do some more macro level pictures of the tweaking in addition to the supplied close ups?

In reply to Dusterbd13-michael (Forum Supporter) :

Cant swap valve covers side to side.  There is a cutout for the alternator on the other valve cover.  Not a big deal. The cap still comes off and its an okay "shot" with the long funnel.

I can try to show which parts touch in a later update.  Its no big deal really and even without me showing pictures, it will be obvious!

Long time no update....   been working on the actual racecar.

So, I managed to lower the rack to clear the engine by cutting the mounts and rewelding.  No pics, case it is just tacked in place til I can remove the subframe.

I decided to tackle an issue I knew I was gonna have...  I need to use the rx8 crank trigger (and the oil pressure sensor and the water temp sensor) to keep the ecu happy so that the car functions properly.  (Tach, power steering, oil pressure gauge, water temp gauge).

I took the rx8 crank pulley, disassembled it, cut the back of it off and it like magically fits and bolt to the lz9 engine.  This piece had me sooper worried out what to do.  So glad it worked out.

The only other real heartburn I have is the exhaust.  It looks like I'll be making custom headers... (Not my first time, but I do NOT enjoy it).
