Hey group. Im new here and the owner of a great 08 mx5. Im wanting to start some autox and track scca stuff. Looking to get an extra set of wheels for race rubber. Any advice or experience for 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels for track or autox? Dont want to assume bigger is better.

Thanks Mymymx5

Welcome aboard!!!

If you are just starting out, I would recommend just spending, at least, your first season of autocross with whatever wheel/tire combo your mx5 cams with.

You will not be fast, but you will learn more about car-control than you would by jumping straight into r-comps.

You would also learn more about what you like/dislike about the handling of your car, and what needs to be changed, before throwing cubic dollars on sticky tires.

Nothing wrong with traction, although tire grip isn't the weakest part of a 2008 Miata chassis. Shocks are the biggest problem.

TRM 17x9 wheels are a good bang for the buck, and you can load them up with 235/45-17 under stock bodywork. The nice thing about having dedicated track rubber is that they'll usually hold up better than the all-seasons that came on the car under the rigors of track use. One good all-around tire that I like in these sizes is the Dunlop Direzza ZII. It'll work as a summer daily driver but still work well on track and the autocross course.
