Any updates? Seems like there's lots of interest in this project. I plan on putting a 3v v10 in a crown vic chassis eventually, this would be great inspiration!

Sorry guys, I got sent to a customer to assess their level of happiness with our product, (I build concrete trucks and garbage trucks) in new Orleans Louisiana. So of course we had to stop by bourbon st on the last night there.

RHD Nova just because, or is there some other motivation for that part of the build?

So sorry it has been so long since my last post. So a couple of years ago we had a house fire and the nova has been sitting at that property. So since i decided to get back on it i had to move it to a location that i could do some work to it. When i got to the place where the car was the winch refused to work. Since i was there to get the car i refused to leave without it. It took close to an hour to get the car loaded with no winch and locked up rear brakes. About half way on the trailer the tongue popped off the hitch. This took much ingenuity to get back on since the car was half on and weighing down the rear of the trailer. Once the car was finally on we headed to the new spot, where i started to back the trailer into place to drop the car. When i got out to start unloading the car i discovered that while backing the trailer into place the tongue had once again slipped off the ball and had become one with the bumper of my excursion which took close to 2 hours to remove with absoutly no tools or cell phone service to call for backup.

I planned on using an 03/04 cobra irs setup, after poking around i will defiantly not be using a cobra setup. The 2017 mustang gt irs setup can be had for $735.00 plus shipping. These units are very plentiful so supply is up with demand thus the price is reasonable.

This whole thing puts me in the ‘way back machine’.  Way back to 1999 or 2000.  Back before the aftermarket had swung into high gear.  I needed a harmonic balancer for a 401 AMC.  Couldn’t find one anywhere.  The interwebs were just getting up a head of steam.  I went on a message board and the response was ‘oh, you should drive to Beckley, West Virginia and talk to a man named Herman Lewis.  He probably has a pile of them’.  So I did.  And he did.  And he also had stacked up like a winter’s supply of firewood something I didn’t know even existed.  And in fact at the time, they only existed in Herman’s dilapidated shop.  Aluminum AMC heads.  Wow!  I didn’t know they made these!  I exclaimed.  “They” don’t, Herman said pointing to an enormous Bridgeport CNC machine sitting off in another room.

That's great. Wish he was still around. It would be easier to have someone make them, just not as much fun

How can those be that cheap? Drag racers putting in solid axles?

That's one possibility. My guess is that they usually crash front first.

There are a  few companies that sell bolt in 9" center section and axles. It may very well be cheaper to do a straight axle conversion but higher horse power cars have an option to leave the irs in but i have to agree that the danger of a front impact crash for a mustang is a real threat that is terrorizing this world. Any one that attends a coffee and cars can attest to this fact.

Ah, so people are driving around in pickups a couple hours after car shows to pick up the pieces after the ambulances leave

anyone have any ideas on how to build the cams?

I decided to use s550 2018 mustang gt suspension on the nova. Took a trip to clover south Carolina to get the suspension. Got the nova to the shop and starting back on it finally. I picked up a complete irs assembly, hub to hub with 13" brakes. The front is a strut suspension with 14" brakes and 4 piston floating calipers, along with the front suspension i got the front half of the car so i can build a negative jig to ensure i have factory geometry.  i want it to be very user friendly so i picked this suspension and am able to get parts anywhere i may be in the country. Also picked up a tr6060 from a 2012 gt500.

Billets are the way to go. Stock long enough and big enough diameter to rough in all your dimensions; lobe diameters, cam journals, attachment points for chain sprockets, etc. Send to a cam company to grind your chosen profile, harden after...or harden before, then grind your cams. First way is likely to result in a few warped cams til the heat treat company figures out how to quench them without turning them into bananas. Second way is likely to result in soft spots on some of the lobes since the hardness decreases as it approaches the core.

i know ford presses the lobes on the stock cams so kinda curious if it would be possible to "relobe" them

The way the factory does it is with a close fit honed tube stock and hydraulic swaging of the lobes...the lobes are sintered powdered metal and held in a fixture to locate the lobes "perfectly" in space...then a hardened ball just a few tenths of a thousandth (.0007") larger than the tube I.D. is pushed through under hydraulic power. This locks the lobes in position.

Knowing how it's done, it would be possible to replicate...but far more expensive than just cutting the billets and experimenting with heat treating. Not trying to piss on your Cheerios, but this is tool and die work and I've seen the equipment the job is done on...a Harbor Freight 20 ton press ain't gonna cut it.

What's the hub to hub width on the mustang rear, especially relative to the nova?  I'm seeing them for $399 with 3.15 gears for 2017 models.  Is lsd standard on gt?

the hub to hub on the irs is 67.5" the factory nova rearend is 60.25" the wheels i ordered are 18x9.5 with a 0 offset which will push the wheels to 76" overall width. the wheels are a square setup. The front fenders are 72.5" outside width and the rears are 70.5" so the wheels will be outside the fenders just like i planned. Going to wait and see if i like the look or i would rather use flares. not sure uf they are lsd or not

Every new IRS mustang is an 8.8 now. 4cyl, 6cyl or v8. The gt is guaranteed to be lsd though. Actually every mustang 2011 or newer is an 8.8 solid or irs.
