The BMW passed away unexpectedly this morning. Driving up the hill about 100 yards from my driveway the engine stopped, it appears to have suffered a massive seizure.

It died doing what it loved.
Can I ask what it is you do for work that affords you such time to work and the experience to be able to create such things as the Ferrari motor and the wall rebuild?

I read that in Radar O'Reilly's voice.
If you were alive in the 70s, or 80s, you probably know which episode of M*A*S*H.

I work in product development, mostly on the front end where its about the question "Is there a better way to do this?". If the answer is yes, there is a better way then it becomes about figuring out how to actually do it. Home projects are a bit easier in a way because they don't usually involve making stuff that's never been made so a little digging can usually turn up an example or 2 to learn from and there is only 1 person who needs to approve them.....Lana. I just like making stuff (or maybe more accurately I feel compelled in an OCD kind of way to make stuff) and knowing its possible and that there isn't really a deadline for me (other than the ODC that compels me to work on it) takes most of the pressure off so its relaxing mentally if not physically so kind of the opposite of work if that makes sense.
Finding time is a whole other matter....notice the ferrari isn't actually done. The inside of basement wall was supposed to get its first coat of mud this weekend but the exterior lights were undecided until about 5pm yesterday so I didn't know where to put the boxes in the wall so no wiring, insulation or drywall (with the OCD making the completely preventable delay very stressful..."What do you mean you didn't pick out lights? We talked about that, I need them this morning" kind of thing) ....and the slip means the ferrari is pushed out another week.
Edit - oh and the my car died and I have no clear plan for alternate transportation other than take Lana's which is certainly a path to unhappiness delay :(
... gonna' put in another Bimmer engine .. or something more exotic ? Heck .. maybe something not exotic ?
Sure you're already pricing new or used drop ins or to rebuild. Or likely another car entirely.
EDIT : Visited back a few pages .. sheezus' this thread is commendable !! I feel so inadequate. Go away a few months & it appears you're near to being a full F1 machine shop. Wow.

ding, ding, ding. the 328 had other issues I was ignoring as long as it still drove....now there is no way I'd go to the effort to replace the engine knowing those issues remain.
I was 90% leaning to a new impreza but now I'm 50/50 with the other option being a used bmw i3 since I just changed jobs and am now close enough to home (35miles each way) to make an electric commute more viable. I know its still a used bmw but man are they cheap (in theory) to operate and used with under 50k miles but with the range extender engine are under impreza prices so .....I don't know. I do know Lana hates not having her car.

If you are into epic builds, this site is a fertile fishing ground. There are some seriously dropped on their head kinda people around here who go on to build project cars.

I have about 7 cars ive done similar work to that i did to the porsche, if i get bored i might make some threads for them to contribute. This forum is definitely a place i should have been years ago lol

Hey now....
Mke: buy a beater. 3k or less. See how low you can drive the overall cost of ownership per mile
You couldn't pay me to drive an i3.

As someone currently commuting with an i3, unless you can charge t work, you won't make 35 miles each way unless maybe it's a newer one with the larger battery. And it's not winter, or dark, or too windy. Or most especially if it's something you drive the majority of at 70+ mph.
This is based on my commute of 27 miles each way.
I do like the car a lot- it's a really nice place to be, fun to drive in a different kind of way and super great in town, but you have to be sure it meets your needs.

LOL. I saw your thread, very cool project
I suck at bodywork hence the effort I put into wide(er) tires without flares.

Thank you for that. I'm pretty sure there is no place I could plug in at work.
I was looking at the 2014-2016, so small 60Ah battery but with the range extender engine thinking that would make the difference to get me home vs going to the newer models with larger 94 or 120 battery which costs like $4-5k more making them more expensive than the impreza option and in line with something like a bolt that should easily have the range but are low 20s.

I have never been blessed with the sense/feel to detect a car that will last which then leads to things I hate likes walking and spending my limited time and money on cars that aren't the ferrari. I just seem to have a lot better luck shelling out a little more up front and to archive 4-6 mostly trouble free years. the bmw and previous jetta both delivered about 10 cents/mile capital cost so it seemed like a no brainer, but the jetta delivered much low operational cost. I really liked the awd while it was still working which has lead to my current impreza fetish even though I know how disappointing the first few months will seems with the mush suspension and just plain sad hp.

I'd forgotten just how much I hate shopping for used cars and the world where most everything that seems like a great deal is at dealer that just plain lies about the price in the ad. I was watching TV and an ad for cargurus was on, went to the website and sorted by price, the first dozen or so cars are scams from the same places I saw when I was shopping for the bmw...we advertise the "we finance price, let me get you the cash price" or "that's the export price with us acting as broker, let me get you the domestic price" just bizarre lies to sneak around bait and switch laws. Its a strange world when ebay seems the safest place to shop because they have to sell for the price they list.......although even then I almost made an offer on a car that in person turned out to look like it had been through some kind of sand storm, only car on the lot that wasn't washed, really dusty....but I literally see them washing other cars that are much cleaner....hmmmmm......wipe the dust away and even the glass has no gloss, the car was basically totaled and certainly not priced accordingly. This is why my last 2 purchases ended up R title cars....the guys were honest and a pleasure to deal with. Rant over.
edit: Oh, and I found the new ferrari cylinders in the shop yesterday evening while getting tools for basement work, Lana "forgot" to tell me they'd arrive and she put them in the sho...in the corner..... behind the lathe.....i suspect to keep me focused on "more important" things.
Is it wrong that every time I read "Lana" in this thread my brain automatically visualizes Lana from Archer?

Had to google that, never heard of Archer.....my Lana is "blonde" and while sweet with the cutest Ukrainian accent, perhaps best described here:
Man who seems to know Lana talking
So I'm busy building the walls and bathroom in the basement she asked for while I wait for a few more bits of duct work to show up so i can do that work for her.

We are remodeling our house right now as well.. why don't our wives understand that the cars are more important lol Dont forget to take time to relax
You can sleep in your car, but can never get anywhere in a house. Remind her of that.......and you may have to sleep in your car.

We're kind of on lockdown and I'm out of basement material and it's raining so no yard work....to the shop!
I decided to see what I need to do to make the 2 new rods part of the set so I weighed everything....the one is pretty light with the small end already about a gram under where I finished the others and the total weight about 1/2 gram over....and while I don't remember doing it it looks like I added oil grooves to the the others so I'll need to do that and probably make this new rod the lightest in every way in the process :(
About 10g to come off the other so that one will be easy to deal with.
Sorry just a building person here. Are you using pressure treated lumber for the bases of your walls? Also if the cement wall is in contact with the outside dirt a plastic vapor barrier is needed between it and the studs. Just my .02 take it as needed. As for the car that's way over my pay grade in fab work.

Yes, pressure treated on the concrete. We went round and round on vapor barrier and finally settled on no
Do I need a vapor barrier?
We have a french drain and decided best to not touch the wall, any water ends up I. The drain, moisture can dramy to the inside....in theory
