Cool project!

Could you transverse mount the engine and use a stock TSX or RSX transmission?  Seems like that might package really nicely.

I do believe one guy was working on that, but it appeared to need lots of chassis cutting and the axles don't line up very well with the wheels.  I'd prefer to keep the north/south orientation, there are kits to make that installation much simpler.

I've traded some messages with a buddy running a k24 in his mr2 spyder.  He said he started with a k20, then swapped to k24 and is much happier with its higher torque.  Thats enough guidance for my decision.

she's here!  It's not as "rust free" as the sweet old man claimed. The front trunk floor has been cut out and patched.  The original battery tray has been cut out and replaced with an aftermarket aluminum piece. Someone bondo'd the front fender seams at the cowl, almost certainly to cover some rust. However, the metal under the battery looks pretty good and the under side of the car looks great.  $5k was a "good deal" but not quite the "super stellar deal" I was hoping it was.

overall I'm very pleased. It's a solid chassis for a hot rod build. I ordered some wheel studs because I can't stand wheel bolts.  Should be fun!

She idles high, sputters sometimes, smokes a bit but actually feels peppy at higher rpms.  Pretty fun!  The shifter is hilariously vague.  Just move it in the direction of the gear and let out the clutch and hope. There's no notch, click, or any other indication that you're actually in a new gear.

The car came with a 916 replica bumper mounted on it.  I'm not a huge fan, it reminds me of the 90s Erebuni fast n furious kits with the pointy edges and protrudes out 4" further than stock.  My dads car came with some fiberglass bumpers and lip.  I swapped the front today.  Took way longer than I thought trimming edges, attaching, reattaching, etc.  oh well, I like the look a lot better.

I have driven a 914 I worked on for a customer handful of times and can vouch for the shifter feeling like absolutely nothing. Plus my Sasquatch body folded up in it didn't help.

That render is awesome, love a wide 914, there was local guy that built a handful of them, usually used chevy v-6 if I remember right, one had an ARCA engine maybe?

Also, guessing the black car is the car you old car?

Yep, the black car was my dads project for many years.  Its pretty rusty. I inherited it recently and am swapping the good stuff to the new yellow car.

turned down the idle a bit and drove her to the gas station for some fresh juice and then to Lowe's.  It ran much smoother today, none of the rough stuff or hesitation.  It was actually a freakin blast on open roads but the transmission is a bit of a bear and makes stop and go stuff a bitch, but I'm getting better at it.  It's a shame the Boxster trans won't bolt up to this engine because the trans is definitely the weak point. I'm putting the engine swap on the back burner. That drive was a hoot!   Focusing on the cosmetic stuff and 5 lug/fuchs swap for now.  Oh yeah, targa top has some squeaks.  I'll try to address that too. I'd like to find some bolted mounts like are available for Miatas.

miata wheels and stickies since the firm events are at least 50% tarmac.

just finished the site lap and the stickies seem to be a good choice. At least 60% tarmac today.

The top 3 cars are all turbo. the top 2 are both on all terrains. This long travel, turbo yxz is 3rd on Geolanders, same as the nitro cross CanAms had when they ran here.  My short stickies proved a bad choice. I'm riding 5th gear rev limiter down the whole main straight.  I've switched to my taller rally tires now.  They'll help on the straight but no help on the asphalt turns.  We'll see.  I'm hanging close but doubt I'll be able to gain on them.

I was able to squeak out a 3rd place after the turbo yxz put a window in his block.  Winner was on these General A/Ts and says he's already run 2 stage rallies with them (the only log booked sxs running rally in the US, besides Sebastian's Rage buggy). Neither of my tires were the right answer today.  The rally tires felt like banana peels on the tarmac.  Although I'm not sure the right tires would be enough against these big power turbo machines, especially at a high speed venue like the Firm.

I've never done a build with a parts car on hand before and I must say, it's pretty convenient!  Besides the obvious cool flares, wheels etc, today I salvaged the targa top weatherstripping and latches, trunk weatherstripping, passenger door latch, and windshield trim. As rough as my dads car is, all of these bits were in better shape than on the yellow car.
