Oops, Typo. Was trying to post a pic of my Fittapadli 3 spoke leather steering wheel that I had in my ex 84 VW GTI that would look great in your car.

Stay away from a 4k trans if you are going with boost. You will want longer gears for a turbo build.

Took off the doors and fenders today . I feel reaaaaallly lucky I haven’t found any rust yet . Going to look into media blasting to remove all the paint and the rest of the body seams .It will show the true amount of any rust .

I envy your lack of rust!  And lack of carpet glue.  My goodness did my Rabbit have a lot of carpet glue...

It’s has glue. When you hit it with a wire wheel it turns into cotton candy

Took out the tray shield. Half of it was cut out already by previous owner . I swear if I see anymore sound proofing I’m going to loose it !!

Score of the day is I secured not just 1 but 2 ABE 1.8t complete engines . Picking up on Sunday

Took out the roof support . Good thing I did , it was only attached at the very ends .

Previous owner seemed to thing silicone was the way to attach it to the roof .

Much of the roof support in my car worked itself loose over the years.  It looked to me like the factory actually glued it to the roof, but I could be wrong.  At any rate mine is now welded in place.

Well come to find out from a very reliable source that the transmission I was planning on using will not last long in a racing environment. So I’ll sell it and find a 02a or 02j .

Any fellow mk1 racers have any input to which one will do the trick ?

At least where I am finding a good used o2a is getting to be difficult. I would skip right to the o2j from a mk4 (ideally a 1.8t box). I converted my o2a in my mk2 to and 02j shifter tower and used mk4 cables and shifter box and am pretty pleased with the results. Even went one whole season with an aba-t before the stock clutch said no thanks.

Did you have to purchase special mounts for your 02a ?

In reply to mod9 :

Since I put it in a mk2 I was able to use b3 Passat mounts.

I believe a “custom” mount is required for the drivers side to put an o2a/02j in a mk1. Last i checked several companies made them.

Definitely go for a 02J, the shifter is far superior, as is the clutch system. Race upgrades etc.. are far more readily available too

Here in Europe there are a few manufacturers of mounts to fit 02A/J gearboxes into the A1 chassis, I'm sure there must be similar in the US

As somebody else mentioned, the roof support is only bonded to the skin. Over the years the heat from sun soak dries out the adhesive. Not sure I'd recommend leaving them out though, my skin boomed like crazy without it.

I planned on a NA 8v so the 020 was what I was going to do.  keep the power low and the shifts slow and a stock O2A/J trans should be good to get you rolling on track.

Got the first of 2 AEB 1.8t engines out today. I’ll get the wire harness from the dash forward out of the donor car tomorrow.

Engine #2 will have to wait till next weekend to get pulled . Sure is easy when you take off the entire front end due to sending the car to the scrap yard when I’m done .
